Time (Got Some?)

I don't seem to have any. Time, that is.

I think I'm just trying to do too much shit in life. And, as a result, I don't have enough time to do any single thing particularly well.

Monday through Friday, I wake up at 5:30 and leave the house at about 6:45. I get to work at TASCAM by 7:30. I stay until about 6:00pm, arrive home by 7:00. At that point, I have about an hour to hang out with my son until his bedtime.

So, that's the standard stuff every weekday. At the same time, I'm trying to:

- Compose and record music.

- Hang out with my son as much as possible.

- Watch every L.A. Kings hockey game.

- Watch as many football games as possible on the weekends.

- Play my fun little computer game that I'm into right now.

- Spend time with several friends...you gotta have friends, you know.

- Keep in touch with the rest of my family to avoid the large guilt trip that invariably happens when I don't keep in contact with Mom, Sister, In-Laws, Nieces, Nephews and all the others.

- Post on this forum, several other forums and newsgroups.

- Babysit the Keyboard Corner football pool.

- Contribute to the domestic duties of keeping my house from looking like a disaster area.

- Relax and "hang out" every so often so I can know that I haven't turned into a mindless robot.

And so on an so forth.

Do you have any time? How do you do it? Can I borrow some from you? Say, a cup and a half? I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a little time today.

- Jeff

Same problem, made worse for a while when I started playing online games. One thing you never mentioned is the time to wind down after a stressful day. 500 employees think I am the person to call if they have a computer problem or a question about paperwork. No one wants to talk to my assistants first. My boss thinks enough of me to volunteer to chair a statewide committee on data collection so now I spend as much time on work for the state as I do for the agency. By the time I get home I dont want to look at a computer so I get very little sequencing done. I just want to be a zombie and stare quietly into space. The only time I play music to relax. Very little practice or composition.

You know, when thinking of what to knock out I have to think about what is importing within music.

Practice piano.

Practice synth leads.

Compose.

Learn to be efficient in Sonar, Reaktor 3, or any other deep program.

Learn how to use my Emu XL-7 or the sampler on the Roland Fantom.

Create new sounds.

Create my dream drum set in GigaSampler.

Practice drums.

Practice guitar.

This was no problem when I was a full time musician. Now I really need to just choose one or two things and become proficient again.

i have my issues with the time thing too....the main thing that allows me to get work done is that i don't have any video games loaded on any computers, playstation is in the closet, and i don't have a girlfriend! :D but i still have a hard time organizing myself to be efficient though.....
Rule #2: Don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

The older you get the less you have. Especially when you've got family. Damn, how I wish I was back in high school so I could do more of the stuff I need to do now back then, like practice.

But make no mistake, the NUMBER ONE priority you got there Jeff is the time with your son. Good to know you're spending as much as you can, and I advise you spend even more (this from a guy who never spent time with his dad). The missus too. All that other shit won't mean squat...or lemme put it another way...all the other stuff would mean more and the rewards will be greater if the time the family deserves is given.

Besides, it's a lot more fun (tho sometimes REALLY frustrating) playing with my 3yr old and 1 yr old baby girls than working overtime.

Another solution would be to teach them D&D when they get old enough... :o

This is my main problem as well - I have no time! The main difference with Jeff is, I spend all my time making music. This is more gratifying I guess. But as most of you may know, it can get really absurd in the 'busy' periods... You accept a few different commitments, then you look at your schedule and visualize the sleepless nights... Then, when you're more or less committed to a girlfriend, the REAL trouble starts!
