RABid
I tested it extensively. While many people like it for the string sections I felt it was to costly to not have any solo strings. It also is limited to 128 programs and many are pads rather than natural strings. I choose to hold out and buy a string compilation for my sampler instead. This post edited for speling. Yes Rabid, I have the "Miroslav" String Ensembles set for my Yamaha A4000 sampler, and are by far the best solo/string set I've heard (comparing them to keyboards that is - and anything to be honest save the "real thing" that is). They're memory hogs mind you, but the end result is worth it. I also have "Symphony of Voices" and again, are far better than anything I've heard anywhere. These Samples take up even more memory than the String ones (34MB for one sound anyone?). But the results are excellent.... After a bit of editing that is (Akai to Yamaha work on the A4000, but You have to adjust the Envelope & Velocity settings to you liking, same too with the String Ensembles) However, once you Edit And save your sound To Hard Drive, they're all there waiting for you to load As for the XV string card.....at £270.00 pound sterling they are NOT CHEAP, and since I have my eyes on a Roland RD-700, which will only take these cards, i make think again. Maybe the Fantom! - it does have One slot available for a JV card....at least... I wonder? - what is the best Keyboard out there for Strings? (supposing one didn't want a sampler?)When I say strings, I mean really good ones. [ 12-18-2001: Message edited by: Antonio7 ]
RABid
Have you tried the Emu Virtuoso 2000 module? 512 ROM & 512 User Presets. I have a lot of P2K expansion cards but not the two that make up this module. You can also add a third 32 meg Peter Siedlaczek Advanced Orchestra ROM. Handy for strings on the go, recording, or building a song before transferring parts to a more extensive and precise sample library. That leaves a ROM slot open for when you want to use the module for something other than string parts. Or, you can put in a flash ROM of your favorite string samples from you Emu4K series. Rick K.
I second that question. I have an RD700 and would like some additional strings. Anybody used one and possibly have a sound list?
Marvster
There's a [pretty lame] demo on Roland's site: http://www.rolandus.com/SUPPORT/AUDIO/AUDIO.HTM From what I've heard, however, the demo doesn't do the actual sounds justice. At least a couple folks I've spoken to thought they were superb. Marv

[ 12-18-2001: Message edited by: Antonio7 ] I've used the Miroslav strings and they are nice. But the new king of string ensembles is the Garritan Orchestral Strings for GigaSampler. 16CDs worth of ensemble strings, gobs of articulations , gorgeous sound, no loops, each note sampled, $1,000 price tag (which is $595 less than Miroslav's one CD library) Home page , endorsements. dansouth
I have the SRX-04 Symphonique Strings card and I like it a lot. No, it's not going to compare head to head with Gigasampler libraries, but it sounds much better than the strings in ANY synth that I've tried. It also sounds better than most of the sample libraries that I've heard (for traditional samplers such as the Roland S-760 or the Kurzweil K2500). Personally, I like the convenience of an expansion board. I turn on my XV-5080 and it's ready to go in three seconds. I don't want to monkey around with a separate computer and complicated sample libraries when I'm composing or arranging. I can always replace the parts with better samples when I'm finished, but the SRX samples sound good enough for most applications IMO. No, there are no solo strings on this card. I expect that Roland will release a solo strings card (or CD-ROM) in the future. With regard to there being "only 128 programs," the programs cover all of the bases. You'll probably want to customize them for your needs anyway, so if you get tired of the programs that Roland has provided, start tweaking.
