You can do a simple Google search and find a load of stuff out there.

Don't have kids, so never really looked into this. Have you looked into local piano/music groups? Group piano lessons are cheap and hands on...your child will learn much faster this way and WILL not lose attention as quickly. A 12yr old may have a difficult time concentrating on the internet. If he's interacting with other piano students his age, it probably would be best. That's how I grew up...and I'm very grateful my parents pushed me through the early stages. It opened up another world for me.

Have to concur. I've got two sons, 12 & 14, and am following the advice I've given to countless mothers who have asked me about my background after a gig.

Go the route of private lessons. It may be hard finding a teacher that works well with your child, but the search is worth it. Be prepared after 1.5 to 2.5 years, your kid may want to bail on the lessons. If you can encourage/cajole/force your kid to keep it up, that seems to be the threshold in my experience that gets them staying on board for many more years.

Your mileage may vary.

One more thing...

I started piano lessons when I was 3 1/2. That's a little early for most kids, but I loved every minute of learning the instrument, and in turn learning musicianship in general.

Most studies these days show (and I 100% agree) that the discipline of piano lessons give kids some direction that applies to many more things in life than music. It also provides a jump start on creative thinking, which is applicable in nearly every aspect of life. Kids who have structured musical training usually end up getting higher test scores, understand new ideas faster and easier than other kids, and have a much higher percentage of financial/career success than kids with no music experience.

Also, the piano is the very best instrument to learn on, and the concepts that you absorb apply to every other musical instrument as well. Although I still play keyboard instruments, the concepts I learned on piano gave me a huge jump start on the other kids I knew who played guitar and other non-keyboard tools.

In case you didn't get the idea yet that I am in favor of getting your kid into lessons, let me be clear: it's the single most important single thing that influenced the rest of my life in a positive way. I won't force my son to take lessons by any means (he's not even three yet), but one of my biggest hopes for him is that music is as an important element in his life as it has been in mine.

i believe he can do it, and thats why ive got him this yamaha djx ll for christmas, he has to start with something and this seems to be an okay one to start with, i cant read music but can play things by ear, i`m not that good but i can make tunes, ive been hunting about the net for music sheets so he can lern them as well.
