Anybody using the oasys pci system?

Hello forum people(s), thanks for reading my lousy message :)

If you could help me out with a precarious predicament regarding gear lust and perhaps a nice product removing me one step from this vicious cycle I would be so pleased.

...So, I located an oasys at my local guitar center. Its just sitting there, marked down in price beyond whats reasonable waiting for me to pick it up.

So...is there a catch here?

I've lurked on this forum, heard the raves about triton strings this..ms2000 that yada yada...

Well, this seems to give me much of that and then some for a relatively slim cost.

I look at what this offer's me, and considering my computer is integral to my set up for audio and midi this seems an incredible offer.

Does anybody know how much horsepower I'll get running a few of the dsp synths in tandem with a few efx, and how that will effect its sample playback aspects etc etc?

Is this a stable system, wichever platform you use?

(I use mac and pc)

Is there any reason why I should get one(please stop me before I do), if not thanks anyways.

Happy hollidays.

put it in your mac...rock solid here.

what is the catch? if there is one, it is that you cannot expect the card to be the sole device for creating a complex multitimbral arrangement...the Korg OASYS was created with quality in mind, not quantity.

synth voice count depends on the dsp model and number of voices you request...the Prophet 5 model (killer) eats a lot of DSP...in fact, 8 voices of it will eat the whole card! that said, other models eat less DSP and all offer excellent sound.

effects DSP usage also varies, but reverbs eat the most. not counting the reverbs (as I use external hardware for that purpose) I tend to get 18-24 inserts/auxes when using the OASYS as an effects device, running no synths.

in the end, expect to get 2-4 synth programs running, each with 2-3 insert effects.

simply put, it is the best $399 you will ever spend on an audio device...the number of effects is staggering (nearly 150), the synthesis models are varied and all sound excellent. by the time you factor in the 24-bit I/O digital and analog I/O, up to 160 seconds of delay, 24MB of 24-bit sampling, zero-latency monitoring with effects, ASIO integration, top-flight sound, and some of the best net support I have ever seen, it is a no-brainer.

I am considering getting a 2nd one.

Go tell someone you love that you love them.

oh, and if this matters, you get the entire wave ROM of the Triton plus the waves from the first 3 expansion boards...all uncompressed, 24-bit...the OASYS is the best-sounding synth Korg has ever made, according to Korg.

and unlike the Triton, the envelopes and LFOs are DSP-rate, so your sounds have punch and life like no other Korg hardware.

did I mention you can MIDI automate every parameter in the synth and effects engines?

did I mention the MiniMoog model is downright badass?

or that there is active development for the card? the OASYS product manager (Dan Phillips) has released multiple bitcrushers, vocoders, and delay network plug-ins for free, and other people have done additional physical models for the card?

if you use the Mac, you can talk to Dan and get SynthKit, the low-level development tool for the card...make your own synths and effects, right next to the iron! this is the same software used to make the Z1 and Prophecy.

ok, ok, Ill stop...can you tell I love my OASYS? :)

Go tell someone you love that you love them.

Damn, I can see why! I didn't realize the OASYS was all that. You've got me wanting one now.

Hmmm...and for about the same money I'd spend just on the two expansion boards I've been considering for my Triton. Sounds kinda like a no-brainer. I hope I've still got time to change my Christmas wish list! :D

Peace all,

Is anyone using it as their primary sound I/O card? If so, how well does it work?

I've been wanting to get one for a while, but the very fact I can't use Synthkit on a PC pretty much puts a damper on things :(

But still I do need a nice FX box for my PC audio.

BTW doe sthe card have discrete left/right outputs on mono 1/4 jack size? I don't like these TRS jacks some cards use.

Why is that? SynthKit is for low-level programming of the DSPs. Does the fact you cant low-level program your Andromeda make it any less of a synthesizer?

Buy a $99 Mac, put the OASYS in there and go to town...remember, we all choose our own limitations. I didnt make using a Windows PC for audio one of mine. :)

Yes, it has +4 outs on 1/4" unbalanced jacks. See http://www.korg.com/oasys for more information.

I am now thinking up plots and scheme's to turn my mac and pc into quite the synthesis workstation.

This would involve my mac with oasys, and absynth.

And,my pc with my 001 running logic, reaktor, reason, some of the more obscure softsynths perhaps and maybe a second oasys.

I was also considering creamware's pulsar, but I really think what I've described already is bordering on overkill and pulsar isnt needed.

Thanks guys!

Because of the Oasys I pretty much gave away my Gina card for my PC/Giga rig and took out the Motu2408mkII out of the Mac and put it into the PC. The Oasys is working extremely well as my main sound card. Only caveat is the ADAT sync doesn't really work with DP/Mas.

It's down to $399?!!!!! That is an absolute STEAL!

I use a ProTools|24 system as my main audio I/O system, but if this says anything about the OASYSs power, I have pulled the PT system for the time being and am using the OASYS as my main audio I/O.

No, it doesnt mean I think PT is any less, it is simply that I want to explore some other creative options.

I am using the OASYS for I/O, synthesis, fx and sampling. I have a t.c. FireworX and M3000 hanging off of the optical I/O, and a Lexicon PCM-81 hanging off of the S/PDIF.

Regarding the OASYS, I love the plucked string models. I mainly use them for spice in the mix. There is an organic quality that PCM/samples can't match. That alone is worth the price of the board for me.

The analog modeling is top drawer as well. 95% of what I the OASYS for is physcial modeling. The PCM stuff is nice, but I tend to use GigaSampler for sampling.

If you use a computer to make music, the OASYS is a must, IMHO.
