joco
I am new to this but have been looking to get a sound module. I have been looking at the Roland JV1010, XV3080 and 5080, however I am confused. I have been to three stores and no one can tell me the difference between these three, does anyone know, I mean I can read the brochure but I am not sure what it all means. Do they all have the same sounds? At one of the stores I played with the 3080 and 5080 and it seemed as if most sounds were on both with the exception of the USER bank, what are those? Do they come pre-programmed or are they only created by a user? How does the JV-1010 compare, can you get the same sounds on it? Well these are just a few of my questions, you can email me privately if you wish.... cuz I have a ton more questions. PS Can anyone recommend a good knowledgable store in NYC! Any user location program can be written over by you, the user, and you can save the factory user location programs before writing over them. The JV-1010 has the sounds from JV-1080 & 2080 which came before the XV series Though it's an older sound set, a JV-1010 is under $400 amd there are a lot of 1080 & 2080 sounds on hit records. The JV-1010 looks like it's about to be replaced by the XV-5050. All these modules will take the older Roland JV expansion cards, only the XV series take the newer SRX cards. I've never had good luck finding sales help on 48th St. Perhaps B&H is better. [ 12-07-2001: Message edited by: mzeger ]
Tusker
Sure, I'll try Joe: I have been to three stores and no one can tell me the difference between these three, does anyone know, I mean I can read the brochure but I am not sure what it all means. Do they all have the same sounds? The XV's are the newer models, the JV is an older model. Some of the sounds may have the same name, but (should) sound better on the newer models. The newer models, are said to dedicate more memory to each sound, allow for stereo samples, etc. The 5080 allows you to play back samples (your own, or 3rd party) while the 3080 (like the JV1010) only allows you to play the stock sounds, or sounds that have been loaded via expansion cards. There are other differences as well. Check out the table below: http://www.lakewoodsoftware.com/XV-5080/compare.html Originally posted by joco: At one of the stores I played with the 3080 and 5080 and it seemed as if most sounds were on both with the exception of the USER bank, what are those? Many of the factory user bank sounds are sounds that are already elsewhere in the synth (in some other bank). The user bank is where you are supposed to store your own creations. (Or pull sounds from elsewhere in the synth, so they can be close at hand.) Originally posted by joco: [QB]How does the JV-1010 compare, can you get the same sounds on it? The XV's can play all the JV sounds. The JV's cannot play all the XV sounds. The patches with the same name, sound larger and a little more three dimensional on the xv models IMO. The XB models come with 64MB of ram, while the JV comes with (I believe) the default 6MB of the JV series, plus the 8MB session expansion board. There are other differences other than the sound. The JV1010 is intended as a playback (rather than programming) module and has very limited front panel control. Roland has announced what appears to be a replacement for the JV1010, the XV5050, but it's not in stores yet (in the US). Whether you want to pay the extra for the more comprehensive module, will depend on your goals, your budget, your other gear, etc. Regards, Jerry
