tenthplanet
Ah yes, that immortal line from "Moscow on the Hudson". The question is are the coffee requiremnts of a keyboard player different than other players? What gets you up,keeps you up and keeps you runnin'. Coffee as used here does include expresso and all manner of brewing. But decaf is not allowed unless you can make an extremely good case. jimbyjoe
"decaf coffee? kinda like kissing your sister" whenever i practice piano now or do anything that requires any of my "talent", i have a coffee beforehand. i read somewhere it stimulates the creative part of your brain. i think musicians in general have a closer relationship with the espresso machine. btw, i don't drink instant coffee unless the choice is drink instant or fall asleep. i have a beautiful krups espresso maker, and i am also utilising my plunger and single drip filter. do you have gloria jean's coffee in america (i think it started there)? fantastic. we have just had starbucks start here and it is so so so average. you just have to say the word "coffee" and you have my attention. it can all be summed up in my sig file...................... pray for peace, k "Consider how much coffee you're drinking - it's probably not enough." cg1155
As an interesting tangent, I was in a medical lecture on Atention Deficit Disorder this morning and learned to my great astonishment that Ritalin and other ADHD medicines are . . . STIMULANTS (hmm, sorta like caffeine) and work by turning up the "thinking" portion of the brain. So it is not unbelievable that caffeine may increase creativity and concentration. And also stabilizes temperament! At least for me. My wife knows better than to bother me for anything BC (before coffee). My daily routine starts with 3 cups of REAL coffee to jump-start my brain, then I switch to Pepsi later in the day. Coffee only works for me first thing in the morning. Any later just gives me heartburn. And nothing fancy for me, either. My idea of gourmet coffee is to use bottled water in the coffee maker! BTW, Jimbyjoe I like your analogy for decaf! I also say it's like playing a synth with the power off! Peace all, Steve ><> Steve
tenthplanet
Jimbyjoe; what you report is intresting here in So Cal. I,ve found the situation is reversed between Gloria Jeans and Starbucks. I like your brewing tools i have similar. Krups makes very nice machines. Steve; you have the right idea, coffee is 98% water. It pays to use the best. Weird isn't it. Brewing good coffee is like brewing good music. jimbyjoe
steve, how do you have 3 cups in the morning? how about 1 but 3 times normal strength? i'm resorting to my instant coffee situation at the moment - i'm at work (there are hardly any cars in the carpark and it's still open for another 3 hours.... ), and to avoid falling asleep i've got some of the boss's instant. when i get my dinner from macca's i'll get a coffee from there - at least it's drip filtered at macca's. michael - that sure is interesting about gloria jean's vs. starbucks. what is the most popular brand of instant in the US? over here it's nescafe blend 43. coffee is actually mentioned in the Bible - the apostle paul said to "greet andronicus". also there's a verse that says that Jesus made coffee for His disciples - Hebrews 4:12............. pray for peace, k "Consider how much coffee you're drinking - it's probably not enough." Well, I work evenings so I have the luxury of waking up gradually in the morning. Usually I'll make half a pot and pour it into a big insulated mug that I can nurse over breakfast. I actually like the taste of coffee, so I prefer not to get my dose of caffeine in one highly concentrated blast a la expresso. Besides, I get major heartburn if I slam too much too fast. Jesus made coffee for His disciples? I guess He knew they'd need help for those marathon prayer sessions! Peace all, Steve ><> Steve
tenthplanet
Jimbyjoe: I think it's Taster's Choice. Usually you seem to find Yuban, Nescafe, and Taster's Choice in the market. Instant has lost of lot of popularity. You don't even see the ad's for it you used to. There is an exception to all this. The flavored instant coffee like General Foods International Cofees. They are more like a pleasant coffee drink and are more relaxing then straight coffee. Even I like them. If you have them where you are try the orange flavored one. Very nice. Jeff Klopmeyer
After David Letterman had his heart problems, he had to switch to decaf under doctor's orders. He would do little music stings for awhile every time he took a sip. My favorite one went like this (picture catchy little Manhattan Transfer tune): Decaffeinated Coffee...Its Useless Brown Liquid! I have a couple of coffee possibilities. On a normal day, I stop by Starbucks and get a grande latte. When I am time/financial challenged, the "house blend" at Casa Jeff is Yuban, which my wife buys and I don't like very much. We used to grind our own from whole bean but then got lazy. At dinners and such, I'll often end the night with a good espresso. Yum. But I do indeed love my coffee, and I'm a real bastard when I don't get it for some reason. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon

Tusker
It's 4.30 am in Dallas. I just stumbled on this thread and it is very painful/enticing to me. I would normally be having a cup of java while browsing the internet. You see I am on my fourth day of quitting coffee. Somehow I find I am ok at letting it go (I have quit about a dozen times.) I just find myself going back to it when I need to work to a deadline. Oh well, virtual coffee break over. Back to less tempting threads. cg1155
Jimbyjoe, I don't know the specifics of the XP-50 but generally to get sysex into a keyboard you just open the file in most any midi sequencer (you may have to set the sequencer to send sysex data) and play it into the synth. You may have to set the synth to receive sysex in a menu somewhere and make sure you are in voice mode. Usually the sysex info just rewrites the current patch location so set the synth to an empty or useless patch before beginning and remember to save aftwerward! -Casey

You will need a midi cable connecting your PC to the synth. You can use a sysex to midi convertor (available as freeware on the web) or you can get an editor librarian and use it. The freeware editor librarian I use for the xp50 is: http://aragon.iitb.fhg.de/moss/Software/ChangeIt.html The software will tell you what to do. DOS
If I have to perform, I make sure not to have any caffiene and as little sugar as possible at least 24 hours in advance. Sound anal? I know, but believe me, I get a lot less nervous on stage now. Mike

Pat Azzarello
Almost never drink coffee (haven't in 6 years, at least). I've never needed the drug to get me through on stage or in the studio (though some people mistook focus for boredom). Actually, I find that when I'm 25-30 pounds lighter I give the greatest coffee junkies a run for their money in energy... I'm going to the gym now. burlingame
Have you tried the cold brewed coffe. Takes a generous amount of coffe in a liter bottle and leave in frig. This way keeps the acidic quality out of the coffee. Just add a small amount to the usual blend. Elsewise hold onto your horses. Nathan
