hangee_77
Hi, I need opinion and suggestion to get the best midi/audio seq softwares either cakewalk, cubase, logic, DP,& pro tools! Thanks.
Mark Zeger
Since you mention Pro Tools, are you planning to produce most of your music as recorded audio or MIDI data? Pro Tools is the standard recording application for many studios, but it's not strong for MIDI sequencing. Also, do you already have a computer platform? Have you asked other musicians you know in your area what they use? If there's a common choice that has the feature set you need, it's valuable to have local resources for experienced help. Every software package has it's followers. I use DP and love it. But for every DP fan, there's a Logic fan, etc. You might want to see if your library has back issues of Keyboard that include reviews of the software packages your considering. surfjunkie
ah... DP vs LOGIC vs PT vs CUBASE: the ultimate question! there have been many posts about this in here, be sure you search past threads (esp in craig's forum). i got ProToolsFree (yes, it's free) when it first came out and learned the basics for a few months, then demo'd the others. i chose cubase because at the time it seemed to have the best plugins. it seems like now the 4 are more similar than ever but like mzeger said, everyone likes what they like. all 4 programs are used by many people, i'd say you can't make a wrong choice. timwat
"Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is thought wise". Well, I'll stick my foot in my mouth.... I have an older version of Logic (not Audio) which had a very steep learning curve and I have since stopped using. I am in the market for PC based sequencing, was told that Cakewalk Sonar provides a very intuitive interface and a good PC platform, if most of what I want is MIDI sequencing without a lot of audio. Since I talk both Win and Mac, I was told that both Mac PT and DP are fine selections, PT wins in some ways when it comes to audio, while DP wins in other ways when it comes to MIDI. But like the previous post noted, both PT and DP are used extensively in the industry and neither could be described as a bad choice. Advice I received above from a guy who sells all these packages (Cubase, Logic, Cakewalk, Pro Tools, Digital Performer) and is currently using PT, DP and Sonar. .. RABid
I was ready to switch from Cakewalk to Cubase because I wanted the VST plug in synths. With Sonar's ability to use wrap around programs I no longer have that worry. If there are any special plug ins you want to use check to see what software will run it. Just because something is VST or DXi does not mean that every program that supports those platforms will work well with every plug in. This post edited for speling. Thanks. Hangee_77 : First of all, tell us all what is your plattform. Is it MAC or PC? (or atari... ) For a PC trouble free operation I'd suggest SONAR , the newest version of Cakewalk. If your PC is very powerful i'd suggest then LOGIC AUDIO. For MAC if you're in a "budget" get LOGIC. Want to get more sophisticated? get Digital performer and a MOTU AUDIO Interfase, which would be MY choice if I was a MAC Guy. ProTools is the best for audio, not so for MIDI. Not for "budget" unless you get a DIGI001 and ProTools LE ehich gives you a good piece of both worlds. it runs fine on PC and MAC. So, let us know your purposes, budget and plattform... hangee_77
I use PC Pentium3 as my platform. Actually budget is not really matter,... I'm gonna use it mostly for midi sequencing. Hanjaya C.

Wiggum
Ditto on Cubase... It is sensitive to hardware configurations (ie, the PC version tends to work well on a limited number of systems), but it's a joy with the right platform. I find it much easier to use than Logic, and it still offers things that you won't find in Logic 5.0. BUT...neither app offers multi-level undo, which is long overdue. That being said, you can't really go wrong with any of the packages you mentioned. It all boils down to preference. Wiggum
big g
Logic is very cool. You won't outgrow it. It's great for PC or Mac. Environment window will control your whole midi setup. exs24 is cool. Soundiver patch librarian works with logic like no other sequencer. You'll find it in every pro studio. Upcoming 5.0 version supports OMF for protools export. Vst support is cool. It's also completely customizable so you can set it up to work the way YOU like working. Only thing is the learning curve is a bit steep. I've had it for 6 months and I learn something new about it every time I use it. Go with it.

Thanks. for the time being SONAR is your most complete option. If possible run it on Windows XP with a decent hardware interface (M-Audio, Frontier etc) here's a recent SONAR review http://www.eqmag.com/1001/inrev_sonarxl_111.shtml if you have any questions about it feel free to e-mail me at david.abraham@dfmedia.com -david abraham
