The commercial/plug/advert music thread....

Ok all: Did you ever see a commercial on TV where the song or the music used really stuck in your mind. What was it, and did it motivate you to go write something. Of course it doen't have to be keyboard or synth related.

The one that currently is really sticking with me is a Jaguar ad using a very haunting Chris Issak tune. I always have to listen to it when it runs. Darn if I'm not humming it now.

What sticking with you?

Michael :P

Q:What do you call a truck with nothing in the bed, nothing on the hitch, and room for more than three people in the cab? A:"A car"....

normally it's just very clever hooks repeating the products' name or the company. over here there's an electrical retailer called harvey norman and whenever the song comes on radio or tv my wife sings it. it annoys me!!!! it's very catchy is the thing.

i'm just glad microsoft haven't got a jingle going - the intel "ding ding ding ding" is enough!!!!!

pray for peace,

k

The one I like is for a VW ad. It's a quiet acoustic guitar/vocal song that sounds kind of like Mark-Almond. I wish I knew the song and the artist. The visual in the ad is a group of people driving to a party at night. When they arrive, they look at the people at the party, and then they look at each other. The next visual shows them driving in the car underneath the stars...

Does anyone here know the artist and song in this ad?

I've always thought that if memorability alone were the standard of a great tune, then the Army's "Be all that you can be" jingle was the best piece of music ever recorded.

Anyone who is more or less 40 and lives in the northeast is likely to remember forever the "226-0841, the Pocono Garden Lodge" jingle. I listen much more closely to commercial music today than ever before, and it's a real mixed bad. Electronic or electronica fused with earthier elements still seems to be the order of the day, and of course they have some very clever programmers out there.

There was commercial, I believe for a credit card company, that featured some great warped and grotesque circus/cabaret accordion music, which is the kind of thing I really like and do pretty well. Made me think their might be a place for me after all.

Also on the credit front, I really dig that post-punk cover of "If I only had a Brain" from the Wizard of Oz that's playing a lot right now. Anyone know who that is? It certainly sounds like a familiar band, but that can be misleading. I remember when all the national commercials were trying to sound like an Eno/Lanois production. If the Edge got royalities for imitators...

Happy post-Thanksgiving gorge trauma to you all,

John

In the past 10 years or so, his work has been rediscovered, covered, and been a major influence on many artists (Check out Red House Painters, Elliot Smith, and Ida for examples).

Also covered by a jazz artistes such as Brad Mehldau and even Joni Mitchell who both did versions of the 5/4 classic River Man. Some of his work has a lovely jazz feel, check out Poor Boy...

www.adcritic.com is a great resource for finding out who does the music in a particular commercial. You can often download a quicktime version of the commercial, and if they know who does the music, they have a link to buy the disc on Amazon.

I'm very curious about who does the music for this PT Cruiser commercial:

i usually find beer ads have interesting music, and usually an ad with something energetic

music for games is more inspiring to me however ( im actually trying to get into that buissness)

stuff like the music by Daiki in gran turismo 3

its got an energetic edge

ambiant stuff from horror games or games like diablo is sorta cool to

i guess just ads or games that can instill emotion

My most recent fave is an instrumental guitar tune that came out earlier this year in a Jack Daniels commercial. It's a simple tune, but I liked the dynamics of how the guitar tracks were layered. It starts out with a simple accoustic guitar riff, later joined by a beautiful clear-tone Strat (with so much chorus/verb it almost sounded like it was layered with a synth pad) and finally filled out by drums and a crunchy distorted guitar. It's the only commercial that's ever motivated me to create a new synth patch.

Peace all,

Steve

It's mostly because of the NI's B4. I always listen whenever it's Hammond-like. Believe it or not, the B4 does have a unique Hammond sound. The really good Hammond commercials are using the B4.
