coyote
http://gem.generalmusic.com/en/products/pro/promega3.html I'm looking forward to it hitting the stores. If the info in the above link is accurate, velocity-switching may finally die the death it has long deserved as GEM claims to be modelling the hammerstroke. And 320 note polyphony! That certainly encompasses 88 keys, 3 strings per key. I do hope they also create a module version - I kinda like that big heavy Rhodes MK80 I have now as a controller. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Bobro
There have been a couple of threads mentioning this synth, but you're timing's right on- it's in the new Music Store Koeln (biggest mailorder in Europe? one them at least) catalog. Says it's shipping from "around December", and costs 2,899 Euros, which is 2,560 dollars at the moment. Looks kind of like Captain Nemo's Synclavier, I like that, but there are no audio samples yet at the GEM site. -CB [ 11-20-2001: Message edited by: Bobro ]
coyote
I do wish someone in the NYC area had GeneralMusic as a stock item. As exciting as the technology sounds, I wouldn't lay out $2500 without trying it first. tenthplanet
I hear Rick Wakeman is using one of these. Hopefully they will ship to the U.S. soon now that Peavy is distributing them. soapbox
Hmmm GeneralMusic and Peavey... Why do I find it difficult to get excited? Hey, there's a first time for everything! Enthusiasm powers the world. Craig Anderton's Archiving Article
Stephen Fortner
Hey soap. Happy Thanksgiving everyonwe. While on today I should be thankful for all the stuff my gear can do that would have been inconceivable a few short years ago, I can't help but say what I think the "next big thing" keyboard should really be. This GEM thing looks cool, and it has the right idea. But someone needs to make a keyboard that's basically a road-worthy shell for running software instruments. Imagine a dual-CPU box with a big color LCD. It's running a streamlined version of some host program that allows you to run all kindsa VST instruments. Gigasampler too. The software instruments are wiping the floor with anything I hear in keyboards these days, except for the Alesis Andromeda when it comes to analog. Think about it. If you're into software instruments, your home studio will include a beefy computer, high-quality audio and MIDI interfaces known for low latency, operating system tweaks to get even lower latency and reliability, a set of black-and-whites, and perhaps a knob box. I'd pay $3000 for something that succesfully hardwires these things together and makes 'em live in peace on one chassis. I like the way the cd rom drive has been optimally positioned to eject out over the keyboard just as you get into the peak of your solo - you know your knuckles are going to brush the eject button and its going to happen. Interesting concept though.
tenthplanet
Interesting idea. But they had better move fast. Lest some like Korg beat them to it. Can You say Triton modular? And if that happens expect the wheels and the cd rom tray to be moved. Michael Q:What do you call a truck with nothing in the bed, nothing on the hitch, and room for more than three people in the cab?
