skynare
Hi. I am interested in emotions and chords or scales. (When I play Cmajor triad and Cminor, it sounds different. I feel Cminor is less normal...etc.) So, I want to write my school paper about emotions and chord. However, I don't know where to start. I will research my local library, but I don't have any clue. Is there any "key word" I can search for in the library data base related to the subject? Can anyone tell me which books should I read? Thank you. synthetic
The Range of Harmonic Emotions by Jeff Laity Diminished = Suicidal Minor = Sad Major = Happy Augmented = Bat shit insane Major 7th = Corny Dominant 7th = Expectant Minor 7th = Serious Minor/Major 7th = Spooky Major 6th = Old, fat, balding a little bit Sus 4 = Hopeful Sus 9 = Itchy Dom 7 b9 b11 = A little sleepy, maybe I shouldn't have watched "Hogans Heroes" all night eating ice cream. But that's all in the past now, time to go to work and make some dough. Back when I was in school, we had these heavy things called books. I'm glad they got rid of all of them now that we have this miracle called the internet. You can just find a chat room and get pearls of wisdom from geniuses like me. Paul Berolzheimer
Check out a book called "Music, the Brain, & Ecstasy". You'll learn a lot not just about how chords affect emotion, but rythm, melody, musical context, social & historical context, etc...this book is pretty deep. I don't remember the author offhand but when I do I'll repost. Paul Berolzheimer Progenitor of 2 amazing sound sources
steadyb
I find D minor to be the saddest of all keys. I don't know why really, it just causes people to weep openly.

Magpel
The maj. 7 has gotten a terrible reputation thanks to all the wanking guitarists who just grove on a maj 7 chord thinking they sound "jazzy." Major 7ths can be wonderful chords in the right context, and an example of the wrong context is any song by the band America. A major &th chord in a predominantly triadic or modal setting might sound forced or just plain silly .. <<...and thanks to all the wanking guitarists who just grove on a dominant 9th chord thinking they sound "funky".>> "funky" might require the use of the sharp nine with the dom .seventh ..i.e. ( (spelling top down ) D#, Bb, E natural etc. just psting to see how the spell chekre wrkos or nto Phil Kelly

Bucktunes
Two or more major triads in succession played in root position= blissfully naive. Go get some lessons!
