Come on, yeah, most of its 128 sounds predated GM crap, but it's piano still holds up pretty well. I've heard much worse on much newer boards. And the U-20 seuqenced extremely well. I listen back to song demos I did 10 or 12 years, and while none of the individual sounds were all that striking, the overall mix of a U-20 sequence sounded pretty good. At the time I was shopping I was comparing it to the M1, the D-5 and D-10, a couple of Kawai boards, and I think the Korg T series was just starting to rear its head but was out of my range. I wanted imitative sounds and the U-20 really had tghe best of the lot. Of course, these days its a bookcase. dansouth
I remember playing the U-20 in a music store. I stumbled across the Tuba patch and played an OOM-pa OOM-pa OOM-pa line. Some guy walked over from the other side of the floor, mezmorized. "That's the best tuba sound I've ever heard!" The U-20 was okay for what it was, but there was no way I was going to lock myself into a preset-only instrument. A couple of months later, the Proteus came out. I was glad that I'd waited. Mats Olsson.
Re U20: I can agree about the sound, it was not bad - some sounds was quite inspiring. But good sound means nothing if the instruments user interface is intuitive and easy to understand. The U20 is by far the most user-unfriendly preset-synth ever marketed IMNSHO. And I'm sure there must be way better book cases available /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later! coyote
Do "home" organs count? My Mom used to own a Thomas Color-Glo organ which was pretty good as far as those things go. She played fairly well (pedals & all), and we used that organ in the first bands I was in when I was a drummer (had a kid who played organ in church - it was kinda interesting). Anyway, somewhere along the line she decided she wanted to trade it in. By that time I knew the magic of Hammonds and a guy had a B3 w/ Leslie for 500 bucks. I couldn't convince her - she wanted a rhythm box in the new organ! So we ended up w/ this horrendous Kimball. It sounded awful.... I inherited that thing and after a year gave it to the Salvation Army. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. It sounded like crap, but I loved that kind of crap. Was very unique. However, dealing with HEX ... my God... dansouth
Hey, Gus! Check out the Mirage the guy plays in that bar in 'El Mariachi'. By the way, that film had cool music, and it was recorded on a Tascam 8-channel cassette portastudio. (Jeff, are you aware of this?)

tenthplanet
I remember the Mirage; but not in a bad way. I remember most of the people who showed up for the Ensoniq clinic for the Mirage were thinking: AH! A DIGITAL MELLOTRON! And in that context it could still be useful today. It sure beat out most of the string machines of it's day. While I'm at it I do have a nomination for worst keyboard. I never owned one but I am quite familiar with the Arp Omni. It sounded worse than the Arp (Solina) string ensemble even though Arp kept telling us...it's better,it's better! I never got one because i couldn't stand the way it sounded. Yech!
