Blades
Hi all...I am programming a piece for my Dad and it has piano as the main instument. I don't usually do much with "real" piano sounds...mostly electronic or none, so I don't have a good one to use. I'm looking for the best "free" piano soundfont. I really just want it to not sound FAKE...it doesn't have to be perfect. I've tried the Sonic Implants piano...not bad for background, but not as the main instrument. I also got one called NS piano, which is pretty good, but still not quite there, though it is my number one contender at the moment. I was going to use one I found as a free download, but it was missing the middle octave in the free version, which is the place most of this part is and also the place where most piano samples seem to be at their worst. I tried to use the piano on the sw1000xg, but this is definitely a weak point on the card (to me, though the electronic ones are pretty good, esp DX types). Not in the running at all. Please help me. BTW, the song is a "crooner" sort of thing, which is not my style to begin with (I prefer 70's power pop and some alternative)...sort of Frank Sinatra-like...his friend wrote it. Thanks in advance. Magpel
Blades, I don't think there are many great free piano soundfonts out there, esp. if you've tried and weren't thrilled with the sonic implants one. I generally like their stuff though I haven't tried the piano. The piano in Fluid is not horrible. You can use Vienna to mine it out that giant GM bank. Also, hold on a minute, I'm digging up a link to a free piano that I thought was pretty decent...yeah, here it is: http://come.to/bovbjerg Check it out. The tone is pretty decent. The problem with the soundfont pianos is just that they're not very dynamic. John Quote Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
Blades
thanks for the reply...I'm checking out those now...the mp3 demos don't sound bad for the Steinway...they didn't have any samples for the Fazioli. I'll try them and post back. Any others? Blades
Blades
The Steinway will work fine, unless someone else has ideas. Thanks for the link...I'd seen this page before, but didn't really care at the time . thanks again. Blades
Bobro
You can try Pianissimum, it's here: http://space.tin.it/musica/almarzai/sfe.html and all over the net actually. Haven't tried the other piano at the site. Pianissimum is very woody, I think it has the most character of the piano soundfonts I've heard, and a far site better than a typical ROMpler piano IMO. It's been tweaked by various people, I'd send you my tweak but I can't find it, it's been a while since I used it. Some funkiness in loop-points, release times, etc., but all in all it has an old-fashioned character- I used it with crooning vox, it worked well. -CB

John Also check out hammersound.net and download the steinbow piano.. in my opinion thats the best soundfont, I preferred that to my Korg SG Rack. peace Neil
skynare
You can download Megapiano 1 and 2 from http://www.geocities.com/mailgoogle/text/files1.html Megapiano is edited from MegaBank v2.50, which is available at hammersound.net. I like MegaBank v2.50's piano section because its loop points are nicely created. Enjoy. Quote S K Y N A R E

Also Spitfire has a free felt piano in it's own player ... https://labs.spitfireaudio.com/soft-piano (Not sure if a felt piano is the best thing for your dad's voice, but you can try and see.) AnotherScott
Wow, 20 years... this could be a record for resurrecting a zombie thread! Quote Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)
