Music and the night

I read an article the other day where someone said they prefered working on music at night because it's got a more emotional atmosphere. I think I feel the same. I sometimes think the ideal is to work a 10-7 day and then do other stuff in the evening but I find the night a good time to do music and I think I'll stop feeling bad about it and just go with it.

I wonder if it's anything based in primitive stuff like drumming for protection and survival and sexuality too maybe, with the build towards closeness as night draws in. What do you think?

I think people that come up with these theories have too much time http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/rolleyes.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I work at night for three reasons:

1. I have a day job, by the time I get home, make dinner, exercise, do whatever, it's night time. Unfortunately certain things have to come first, and have to be dealt with.

2. It's relaxing. I like to do it as my last activity of the day.

3. If it's during the day, I rather be outside. When I lived in NY, and it was freaking cold out, I would work on music during the day.

I agree with Rod's comment about the theories. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I can't explain why, but it seems my best work is done in the late evening to late night. Granted, 90% of the gigs I do are during that time frame. But when I have an afternoon gig, it just feels somehow strange. I even prefer to do my home projects late at night after everyone has gone to bed. During the day I usually do music "utilities"- organizing patches, reading manuals, cleaning equipment, etc.

Stranger yet is that the sleepier I get, the more creative ideas come to mind. Almost as if my brain is starting to go into some sort of dream state or something. Especially if I've got a slight beer buzz going! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Peace all,

Creativity usually only comes when the rest of our lives are quiet and put away. We also condition ourselves and our minds as to when we can relax and let go of the world. If you worked at night, my guess would be creativity would come during the day, or during early morning hours. If you work during the day, you may come up with ideas, but the only time to work those ideas out on the keyboard and let your emotions and creativity flow is at night.

Me: I come up with ideas all the time and write them down, and then when there is a spare moment when I can work uninterrupted, I sit down and the old upright and work out the details and finish the piece. And yes, for me, the only time I get to do that typically is at night.

Just my two cents,

I like to roll out of bed, go into the studio, and start working first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, a little complication called a job makes this impossible most days, so evening is all I have. The later it gets, the worse my decisions become. My muse talks to me during the morning shower.
