Movie scores

James Newton Howard is awesome, I love the Unbreakable soundtrack. When I went to that film I felt it really got under my skin, very powerful and mature emotionally.

Also there is a lesser known film called Dark Days by Marc Singer

-a brilliant film, which uses works by DJ Shadow as a soundtrack to great effect.

i know what you guys are talking about when it comes to elfman. i'm a big danny elfman fan. i even met the guy and had my picture taken with him. he's a really nice guy. i know you guys can get burnt out by his so called trademark scores, but has anyone seen the movie "midnight run"? a perfect example that danny can do "regular" scores as well without using big orchestras and children's choirs.

Please tell me that you're talking about the score, and not the film...

I can't tell you what a complete waste of my time I thought that movie was. It bored me to tears - I thought it was one of the dumbest films I've seen in years. It was soooooo dramatic and artsy, and the story line was just pathetic, IMO. I thought that it was a perfect example of a director becoming completely full of what an excellent film maker he is, and completely missing the mark in the process. Frankly, I'm surprised that Samuel Jackson made the film in the first place.

If it was supposed to be funny because it was so dry and overly dramatic, it definitely went over my head. I was so busy being annoyed by the movie that I missed the soundtrack, and normally I just love James Newton Howard's work.

Well it certainly wasn't Sixth Sense, but I found it very droll and entertaining, probably didn't hurt that it was dubbed into German. Ultimately unsatisying though, unlike Sixth Sense which was just plain great.

Oh yeah? That's fine for you, you're an accepted member of the entertainment community. What about me? What about Igor? Marginalized by Hollywood yet again. I want my Mummy . . .

An honorable mention might go to Lalo Schifrin. He did all of the Dirty Harry movies and a lot of other Clint Eastwood movies. I know I've seen his

name elsewhere but can't remember. He did some great jazzy scores.

he arranged for quite a few jazz musicians, and played piano with dizzy gillespie & others. great stuff.

How about something you heard in a movie that you always remember .

I am sure that JAWS is something to remember . I also love Samuel Barbers "Adagio for Strings" because of how it was used in the movie PLATOON . Anyone else ? dano

My only commissioned piece was for a film score. It was a documentary about (coincidentally enough) the Halloween parade in NY's Greenwich Village.

It was fun composing to the image and making my music fit the scene, but since it was a documentary, I think it was far easier than scoring, say a romance, comedy or action movie. Essentially, I created a theme and played variations on that theme during the more artistic parts of the film (when there weren't any interviews going on).

It was great fun.

Anyone remember a Sly Stalone movie called "Nighthawks"? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif
