alby Posted April 30, 2001 Posted April 30, 2001 What is it about playing music? As a career minded computer jock, who never quite got past the audition at the Conservatory of Music - I never could fully dedicate myself to making music. Now I am playing here and there in Jam sessions in the Pubs around town. Playing music is now like breathing air. Everything else is just a filler between my weekly Jam sessions! Will those full time musicians out there tell me that playing music to them is just a filler between the days that they sit in front of computer screens writing reports. Now I am addicted to this bloody forum. Someone give me a dose of reality.... Tell me to set some goals, write a career plan, buy that expensive house I can't really afford, so I can have bbq's with people I don't really like. And leave this music thing alone!
d-kay Posted April 30, 2001 Posted April 30, 2001 Damn it!. I'm thinking about the same thing, and I haven't even started working yet. Gosh, I know I'm not good enough to make a living out of playing music, but it still is the no 1 thing I prefer to do. I've studied hard for 5 years at a Tecnical University, and now, when I'm close to graduating, I just don't feel like working with what I'm supposed to work with. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif
DOS Posted May 2, 2001 Posted May 2, 2001 Yeah, I wanted to be an anal, uptight, Business major, but instead I said fook it and decided to follow my heart (as cheesy as that sounds). I think, when you genuinly love something, the money just comes. No, I don't want to make a living in a band--I want to become a Harmony professor or something like that. There are more career opportunities out there for musician than just playing music. Mike
Rod S Posted May 6, 2001 Posted May 6, 2001 You just gotta go with your instincts (in a responsible way) and try to find a compromise. I've always loved music, but always loved science. My interest in technical stuff probably parallels my interest in music. And I've always balanced both out. I went to school in Rochester, NY. Went to some amazing concerts at the Eastman school of music. (still regret not getting more involved though) Bands would jam in the basement of the dorm I lived for the 1st 2 years. Finished up my MS in engineering. I have a job I like, still have time to play, and can afford nice gear. Wouldn't have it any other way. I guess I'm lucky. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Each person has to balance their lives out in their own way. My attitude is a bit more 'level-headed' that DOS's I guess. Follow your heart sometimes is good in theory but have gotten a lot of people i know in trouble. I have my friends who are professonals in technical fields who love music, and are there jamming on weekends. d-kay: There's a lot you can with a technical degree. Plus I hated most of my classes, but love the jobs and internships. Go figure. Get out there and find something you like.
