Roland XV workstation?

Has anyone heard anything about Roland making a new workstation based on the XV series like the XP-80(JV-2080)? I've considered the Triton but I also have a strong feeling that Roland is preparing a successor to the XP series to rival the Triton and possibly Yamaha's new Motif.
Yamaha MODX8, Korg Kronos 2 61, Hammond B3, Novation 61SL MKII, Impulse 61, Roland D-550, Proteus 2000, etc......to name a few.

If Roland follows their normal pattern of squeezing every last incarnation out of every platform that they manufacture, there will probably be at least one new workstation showing up from them.

I would actually be surprised if this turns out not to be the case. The Roland folks don't dig it when people buy anything from any other manufacturer. I'm surprised that they don't make microphones...

Dave, I agree with you too, but I'm itching to see what they will do next. but then again Roland does some strange things. Why did they discontinue the A-70 ? I thought it was doing great.

Well the only reason they made a microphone was so they could have something to sell with their microphone modeling algorhythms in the VS recorders...

But I definitely agree that they should be coming out with an XV type workstation pretty soon... especially knowing that they've had this rebate program on the XP's for the last seven months or so. Unfortunately there will probably be no real news about this kind of thing until the summer NAMM show comes around.

Hence my original point - weren't there already enough microphone choices on the market?

There was a point in time when companies specialized in a certain type of product - that was what they did, and they did it well. Now, half the companies in our industry want to be a one-stop shop, and I believe that this has resulted in a glut of mediocre products, and a confused marketplace.

Look at recording - in the 80's, if you wanted to do some home recording, you basically had Tascam and Fostex from which to choose, with one or two other minor players. If you wanted a four-track cassette recorder, the big debate was whether to go with Tascam's DBX noise reduction, or Fostex's Dolby type C. Now, you can still buy a recorder from either of these companies; or, you can choose one from Roland, Korg, Yamaha, Akai, Boss (yeah, I know it's Roland - it's still another choice, and it's a company that was started to sell effects pedals, fer Chrissakes) Alesis, Mackie, IZ and more...each company making a variety of options at a variety of prices - and that's just hardware-based...don't even get me started on the software options.

I know that it may be seen by some as savvy business practice to expand your company's horizons and potential customer base, but I kinda wish it was still the case that people specialized in a certain type of products, and strove to be the best at those products instead of making their own version of anything that looks like it might be the next big thing - possibly at the cost of the integrity of their core products. In some cases, manufacturers don't even make the products - they just OEM them from a cheap bulk manufacturer, and stick their own name on them!

Plus, they apply pressure to the retailers to stock everything in their product line, otherwise (wink, wink) the retailer might find that the "hot" products might not make it to their store.

Grumble, grumble...
