My first Mac!

Recommended Posts

Well, the stalk dropped a little bundle under the gooseberry bush at the bottom of the garden ... either that or a bunch of boxes were shipped to me at work today. Either way, I'm now the owner of a brand new iBook. I'm installing ... er, things on it at the moment, I'm not sure what but it keeps asking for CDs. More later, I'll ge to the bottom of this Mac vs. PC thing yet ;)
Originally posted by dino321: Sorry to hear that. Perhaps if you get really good with your iBook someday you can get a computer.
I've got a computer, my friend. I also have several Windows boxes ;) Look, I'm not after another stupid Mac / PC war. They got VERY boring several years ago. I'm curious about Macs, I've heard good things and so I (or is that i?) bought one. I'll post comments when I've had enough time to form them. First impressions: All the packaging, printed matter and the computer itself are VERY good. There are lots of well thought out little design features, for example little hooks pop out of the power supply so you can wrap the cable around them when not in use. The whole unit feels very solid. Set up was much easier than XP ... very friendly. On a negative point, the mouse pad thing often stops working for a few seconds which is very annoying. I've put the iBook on charge to see if this helps. I hope it does or I'm going to be pretty pissed off.

Congratulations Rog, you wil probably enjoy the little beastie quite a bit. The touchpad might be fine - but if another finger gets too close to the touchpad, the pointer will act erratically. I do it regularly... If the touchpad is continuing to be flaky, call Applecare and see about sending it in for a fix. If you need to get something done in the short term, plug in any USB mouse. FWIW, I highly recommend getting an Applecare protection plan. It adds an additional 3 yrs to your one year warranty, under the 90 day rules (free phone support, everything is covered), and if you get it as a business(as opposed to an individual) you get 4 yrs of ONSITE care. If anything does go wrong, and not saying that it will, but shit breaks, they will come to you to repair it, and you get priority over the personal users.

Hope this is helpful.
Originally posted by Monster Cereal: So whacha gonna do with it? :D
uh ... look at porn? No, I'm going to use it for mobile recording as soon as I can decide on some decent convertors. The MIO looks to be the only candidate so far but I'm open to suggestions. I need something that can be powered from the firewire port. I don't think USB is going to be up to recording 8 channels of 24 bit, or maybe I'm wrong?

I wouldn't trust the USB for much of anything other than control. Maybe MIDI. Firewire boxes I'm eyeing at the moment are the MOTU 896 and the stuff from Metric Halo. Presonus has one, too, but I haven't messed with it yeet.
I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
Originally posted by Groovepusher Sly: And? Sly
.... and I cancelled the order. I've found a 2882 + DSP in the US for cheaper than a 2882 without DSP here! Stay tuned :) By the way, OS X is brilliant! Much better than XP. I know that XP is bloated and has to deal with literally millions of combinations of hardware and get them to work together, blah blah blah. This iBook works like a dream, OS X is great, the whole feel of the product is first class. It feels a little like my old Amiga but on steroids :) I'll never buy a PC again if I can help it :) Dear Apple, Please send my free Powerbook to ...

Cool that you ordered a 2882. Where did you get it? 8th Street had a good price on that bundle...I am thinking about it, but am wondering if it is overkill for me. I have also been looking at the Tascam 428 + Deck or DP 3.X I have a Ti powerbook with a little 20GB external drive.

Rog, your impressions are just like mine were with this OS9 machine. I was really kind of worried that things would be so foreign I would have a lot of learning to do, but the reverse was true. It's not just that Windows must accomodate for all those combinations of hardware, it has to do it from a platform that is under constant hacker attack. Since the Mac OS is partially embedded in hardware, the vulnerability to viruses is dramatically reduced, so the constant checking Windows seems to do is also less of a time robber. I met an incredible musician in Colorado who had just switched from PC to Mac last year and our conversation could have been used in one of the switch commercials. I'm glad to hear your observations on OSX, as that's probably where I'm heading with my next machine.
