dansouth Posted November 28, 2000 Posted November 28, 2000 The Roland SR-JV80-04 Vintage expansion board features a series of programs for the JV series instruments, plus a second set of programs that, to my knowledge, works only on the JD-990. Are these JD-990 patches compatible with any of the newer Roland instruments? They are not accessible on my JV-1080. Also, I have heard that some of the expansion boards contain demo sequences, but I've never figured out how to load and play them. Any suggestions?
Guest Posted January 7, 2001 Posted January 7, 2001 Dan: I don't have an answer to your first question, but I do for your second: The midi demo files came with the modules (the M series) which were based around the expansion cards. They were not released with the expansion cards themselves. Due to composer copyright considerations, Roland did not make the demos available publicly as MIDI or MP3 files, either. I have been trying to get a good assesment of specific XV series capabilities from the users on the Roland list. If I find an answer to your first question (which concerns me, because I have a vintage card and love it), I'll pass it on. Cheers, Jerry

I've never heard of anyone accessing that second bank any other way than through the use of the JD-990. dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
Guest Posted January 8, 2001 Posted January 8, 2001 Dan: Didn't know if you already knew this .... David Green has mp3's of the expansion board demos on his site: http://www.lilchips.com/roland/expansion/srjv80/index.asp You get to the demos by clicking on the specific exp board. Cheers, Jerry
dansouth Posted January 11, 2001 Author Posted January 11, 2001 Thanks, folks! I appreciate the info and will check out the site. Yeah, that Vintage card is way cool! One of the best bang for the buck purchases I've ever made. Just got the Vintage card for the Triton. The raw waveforms are excellent, but the programming is not as varied as the Roland's.
Guest Posted January 11, 2001 Posted January 11, 2001 - I've never heard of anyone accessing that second bank any other way than through the use of the JD-990. Same here. One of the guys on my Roland list explained that the second bank is a set of patches using the JD-990's oscillator sync parameters ... something that did not translate to the Super JV engine, and (I am pretty certain) to the XV engine. The XV synths have some JD series waveforms in them, but that's about it. I believe the advantages of the XV engine itself are just the stereo waveforms and the more complex velocity switching. However there are other benefits outside the engine: more ROM, access to new expansion boards, COSM effects, sample playback on the 5080, etc. Cheers, Jerry
