xtian_dup1 Posted October 14, 2000 Posted October 14, 2000 Do you folks have any ideas about where I could find about posting MIDI stuff using the Direct Music[DLS] (or Sound Canvas) conventions, or, jeez, even implementing them on my web page? Christian Lunch
rob.rampleyline6.com Posted October 15, 2000 Posted October 15, 2000 I guess this all depends on what you are trying to achieve...? In any case, DLS (DownLoadable Sounds) is way to deliver the sample data for your song, but requires sequence data to go along if you want to actually play it on something. DLS is very much akin to Emu's SoundFonts. There is a recent format, RMID (*.rmi), that is meant for packaging an SMF (Standard MIDI File) and DLS Sound Set together. It seems that Windows Media Player will handle these formats. These are MMA (MIDI Manufacturer's Association) formats. DirectMusic is a Microsoft component of their DirectX family and is essentially a software synth built into Windows(98 and later, I think) that can load DLS instruments along with a bunch of special authoring stuff they've thrown in, you'll need to check the Microsoft site for this. I've never seen any DirectMusic specific content on web pages for a general audience. If you are just looking for a cool Samples+Sequence type authoring thing, especially for the web, I would look into the Beatnik player and authoring tools. www.beatnik.com. You really do have a kazillion options if you are wanting to go for something more sophisticated than just SMF's or MP3's. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/confused.gif - Rob
