OT: Finally a GOOD Windoze email client!

Recommended Posts

Hey all - Like many Windoze users I've been limping along with Outlook Distress as my emailer for quite some time. It's slow. It gets corrupted easily. It's a memory hog. It's vulnerable to viruses. It doesn't even support blind carbon copy. You know. It sucks. It's friggin' Microsloth. I tried to switch to Eudora, but it wouldn't import my probably corrupt Outlook messages (it crashed on the larger mailboxes!), and it's kinda slow and clunky in its own right. Plus it's almost as big a resource hog as Outrage, and I heard (anybody know if this is true?) that they're including spyware in it with the latest version. SO... I decided to search for another email client! And I think I've found a winner here! It's called Foxmail. Get this: - It uses very little memory - It's FAST, even when loading large mailboxes. - It will import your old Outrage messages (only the folders you specify, too - that was the other thing about Eudora, it makes you import either everything or nothing), and also your address book and account info. - It has some really nifty features like macros in signatures, and a cool popup notification when you get new mail which scrolls the header across the screen. - It has no banner ads of any kind, no spyware, and they don't even ask you to register it, although you can send the authors bug reports and feedback. - Of course, none of the nasty viruses that target Outlook will run on it. - IT'S FREE!! Not shareware, not a demo, it's totally free and they don't care what you do with it. I am floored. This is some very cool software! Just go to download.com , do a search for Foxmail and you can get it for yourself and throw Outrage in the trash where it belongs! A couple of things worth noting: - The authors are Chinese, and their English isn't so great. :D So, some of the text of the menu options and help files are unintentionally entertaining. :) But they wrote a great program and that's what counts! - There were a few little quirks I found in setting it up, such as it defaults to being unable to read HTML messages and you have to change a setting to turn that on. Also the import from Outlook left some "artifact" messages which at first I thought meant the messages hadn't imported successfully. But they did, it's just that they were duplicated with screwed up messages. Just delete those and it's no biggie. Also, it's a good idea to compact your Outrage folders before you do the import. Otherwise, the interface is intuitive and it's really a pleasure to use! If you do try it and you're having any trouble configuring it, just post your questions to this thread and I'll try and help ya out, having been there. :) This is really cool! Finally email that doesn't suck!

I’ve been using the real version of Outlook for years now. I’m currently using Outlook 2000, which works perfectly for what I do. The security is very good and I’ve yet to open an infected e-mail. I use it mostly for contacts, task list, calendar, but the e-mail features are very powerful. You can setup custom rules that filter, forward, delete, etc e-mails based upon the content.

Regular Outlook is a lot better than OE but it's still too slow, takes up too many resources if you leave it open, and of course is still vulnerable to worms and such. Of course if you're happy with it, no reason to switch. I just happen to like this program a lot better and it doesn't seem to be mentioned much, so thought I'd point it out.

I'll definitely try this at home. I haven't found anything free that I thought was better than Outlook Express. I don't think Eudora has spyware, but at minimum it has an annoying banner ad system. I'd use Netscape's mail client if their browser didn't fall so far behind.

Dave, Go to the "Filter Manager" under the "Account" menu. Set up a filter for each address or domain you want to block, and under "Action" select "Delete from server directly". You can also check "Auto Reply" and create a template autoresponse that makes it look to the sender as if your email address is no longer valid. :)

Just loaded it, and initial impressions from me are pretty good. I like the way it keeps my 9 or 11 individual incoming mail seperate to the intended accounts... unlike Express. I was going to ask about the block sender thing, too. Was hoping for a quicker deal, but still decent.
