- Posted July 3, 2001 Author Share Posted July 3, 2001 What about if a song can be done well as a cover, and the song allows the artist to make the song "their own"? Would that be a good judge of a "well-written" song? Case in point... I've heard Evan Dando cover a bunch of songs, like "Mrs. Robinson", "How Will I Know", John Waite's "Missing You", Big Star's "The Ballad of El Goodo", etc... And most of his covers sound great. He also did a cover of New Kids on the Block's "Step by Step", but for some reason it was terrible. I don't think there was much he could have done with the song to make it any better -- it was just a poorly-written song from the get go...
