miroslav
A little fun tangent/segue off the "...Stalled Scene" thread. Hippie brings up the issue of 60s/70s/80s... influences. So,...I was thinking about some of the current music out there and who it reminds me of. Here's a few in the "sounds like/reminds of/influenced by" category. (Some of us dinasours will be showing our age). Sugar Ray - The Young Rascals Creed - Iron Butterfly Jewel - Joan Baez Mellissa E. - Janis J. Rolling Stones - Rolling Stones http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Beck - Peter Wolf (J. Geils Band) Dave Matthews - Stephen Stills Any more out there? miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important." miroslav
Well...that's cool...this ain't a right/wrong thing... It wouldn't be so unusual to find that everyone hears things a little differently. It could be just one song, or even a riff from one song, but that is the hook the grabs us, and then, no matter what, it's stuck in our head forever........................... miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important." Tedster
Cool thread! Good that someone else thinks Black Crowes are reminiscent of the Faces. Sugar Ray has reminded me of Wings on several occasions. Smashmouth...some of their Farfisa licks remind me of the Doors, Animals, Raiders...etc. They obviously spend a lot of time in the sixties Fastball...that hit of theirs was "Besame Mucho" reworked... And John Popper reminds me a bit of Van Morrison, too. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

What's his face Leroi obviously got heavily into _Dream of the Blue Turtles_ - I know because I got into Branford's solos heavily as well and know when he's copping them... Matthews has a sophisticated sense of melody, and detail with timbral accents as does Sting. When he lays back I think the balance of raspy overtones against the fundamental of his voice is similar to Sting as well. ------------------ New and Improved Music Soon: http://www.mp3.com/chipmcdonald Guitar Lessons in Augusta Georgia: www.chipmcdonald.com Eccentric blog: https://chipmcdonaldblog.blogspot.com/ / "big ass windbag" - Bruce Swedien

gtrmac
Funny thing to me though is that all the people that the new bands remind you guys of didn't remind anyone of anything. In other words the originals were all originals. Maybe that's why the scene is stagnant. By the way Beck has managed to "remind" me of quite a few people. Maybe my father felt this way just before Rock and Roll was invented. What's next? I have an open mind. ------------------ Mac Bowne G-Clef Acoustics Ltd. Tedster
Too bad that the Faces clones are no more, The Faces with Rod Stewart were one of my favorite rock and roll bands of all time. They had just the right mix...and Rod's voice kicks ass on stuff that's not stupid ballads or disco...wish he'd get back to that one of these days. It'd be like Brian Johnson quitting AC/DC and singing with Kenny G's band. AAAGHGHGHGHG!!! "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

Another fine Rod Stewart moment was with Jeff Beck on the "Truth" & "Beckola" albums around '69. In two days, it won't matter.
Tedster
Oh, you've definitely got that right. Although I believe later on he did resurrect the Beck/Stewart relationship. I think that was in the late 80s when they did the Mayfield cover..."People Get Ready". That was great. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
strat0124
Hey at times the Black Crowes sound like Humble Pie as well........ I haven't heard ANYONE come close to a true Zep sound, I remember someone saying Whitesnake sounded like Zep......and after I purchased the album I wanted to puke! Terrible. I've always liked that balls to the walls boogie that Humble Pie, Rolling Stones, Faces, etc do.......it just has balls. Big time. miroslav
Well it is obvious that we are all building on what came before. If anyone is REALLY waiting for some new band/artist that is going to sound like nothing we've ever heard and look like nothing you've ever seen...you gonna' be waiting a very long time...possibly never. Come on, Led Zepplin was Led Zepplin..but they got their roots from a lot of the old traditional blues greats. The Beatles will never be again, and they got their influneces from R&R and Rockabilly. So now we build on those influences, and on and on and on... However...there is a lot of good new music and musicians out there. There are SO MANY that it is much harder to have a BIG BREAKTROUGH act then it was in the 60s or 70s...when modern R&R/POP was just evolving. The real beauty, and these day it WILL be a VERY subtle beauty, is the acts that can find ways to even slightly adjust and improve on all those influences from the past. BUT, you really have to pay attention to hear it...just waiting for someone to come along and BLOW YOU AWAY...I don't think it's going to happen. So for me to say that a band like Sugar Ray reminds me of/sounds like the Young Rascles...I'm not takin' ANYTHING away from Sugar Ray...I think they are an example of a good band...nice instruments, good tunes, good lyrics...and there are many more. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
