Bonafide
Have any of you used this mic? Do you know how it matches up to some of the other $300-$600 condensors? Any help would be great. Any other suggestions for a an all-around vocal mic in a 'Prosumer' studio. Thanks a ton, Cheers.
strat0124
I have a CAD E100, and it's one of the coolest mic's I have....probably the best mic I own under $400!!!!! I know it sounds like a commerical but I've used it on acoustic guitar, guitar amps, drums, vocals, and still finding new things it sounds good on. That mic and my little Bellari preamp are my two secret weapons of late. You can't go wrong with the E200. Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in
bobkeiserieee.org
I've had a pair of E200s since April 1997, when I paid about $450 each for them from Musician's Friend. Love 'em. One of these days I'll spring for the shock mounts (did I just use a pun?). The internal battery supply (two nine-volt NiMHs which you can charge with phantom power or in a separate charger) is great if you don't have or want to use a pre with phantom power--but the batteries do add some weight. I've used them direct into a Marantz PMD-700 DAT for many gigs. Three patterns gives a lot of versatility. Nice, large diaphragm sound. Transformerless. Gold grille looks great. The mics are pretty solidly built--I had one take a dive (with the stand) from seven feet onto a carpeted concrete floor. Once I got my heart started again I was thrilled to find there was no damage. Your mileage may vary. Check the batteries every now & then to make sure connections are secure. No, they are not Neumanns. But try them, they might work well for you. Let us know what you decide! Philip OKeefe
I have a pair of the original Equitek II's, which are basically the same thing as the E200 (which is a slightly "upgraded" model). Here's some of my impressions: They're good mics. They're NOT something I'd personally choose as my only condensers. They're not really large diaphram mics, rather more mid sized... they are supposed to extend down to 10 Hz on the bottom, and go up to about 18 K on the top, but IMO, they're a bit on the "bright" side tonally. I've used them as drum overheads, acoustic guitar, background vocals, occasionally on kick drums, etc. Rarely for lead vocalists... about the only time I'd consider them for a lead vocal is when I had a really dark or murky sounding singer that needed some serious definition and clairity added... but for general stereo recording they're pretty good. More of a speciality mic than a really neutral general purpose model. Philip OKeefe
BTW, I'd agree with Bob - because of the internal Ni Cd batteries, they make a great choice for live recording gigs. Just make sure you charge them up overnight (using a phantom power supply with the mics turned off) and they should last for about 6 hours - more than enough time for most live gigs. They are durable - I bought my first Equitek just a few months after they came out - and it's still going strong. The only problem I've ever had with either one of them is one of the power switches snapped off once. Easy enough to get repaired and CAD's tech / customer support is very good.
