I Need ADAT/Mixer help, AAARRRGGHHH!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Ok-

I am trying to run my mics thru my board (Beh------ MX2004A), I read on another post that to get around the 2 outs, I can insert my 1/4"'s half way into my Channel inserts and in effect make them outs. I have tried that.

In theory, if I understood correctly what I read, I should be able to then control my volumes, etc. with my faders, correct?

I have an EDAC snake, so maybe I'm doing something wrong (obviously).

Here's what I've got so far:

1 XLR cable into mic in

1 EDAC Snake "Output 1" half way in "Channel Insert 1"

No clue what to do with the EDAC "INPUT 1"

My headphones on but no sound

My master fader and/or individual faders not controlling the signal to the ADAT at all. As I said in my subject - AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!

Can someone please explain this to me like I'm a two year old?!

Thanks!

The problem is that the channel inserts are pre-fader. The volume level can be controlled by the gain control but not the fader. I record a lot off of my smaller PA board using the channel inserts inserted half way as you have discovered and I try to set the gain so I get a good signal to the ADAT without clipping the input. To get volume, tone, pan, etc. you need an eight bus board.

Hi Jen!

Did you know that your Beh______ board ( http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif ) has a extra set of outputs? Whenever you "mute" a channel, it is routed out the "Alt 3 - 4" master fader... essentially, it's a poor person's 4 bus board. I dunno if the extra two busses will be enough, but it can't hurt, right?

BTW, how is your ADAT Edit card working out for you? Please be sure to let me know if you have any problems.

Hey Phil!

I got the card in the mac and for now, it's liviing peacefully with everything else. Recording got pushed back unfortunately due to some family circumstances and now we've run into this problem.

It's funny you replied, cause I was going to shoot you an email today about this.

I was reading in the beh------ manual that it was a 2+2 but I didn't quite understand the concept. I believe 4 would be enough cause the largest amount we're micing at once is my drums and that's 3 mics.

If you could shoot me an email explaining the whole 2+2 thing, that'd be really great!

Thanks!

Okay, by popular demand... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The Beh------ has standard stereo outputs - the stereo output bus. HOWEVER, when a channel is "muted" (with the channel's mute switch) the audio isn't merely "cut off / muted" from the main stereo output bus, it's RE-ROUTED to an aux set of stereo outputs called the Aux 3-4 bus. I believe these "extra" stereo outputs are located on the back panel of the unit, not on the top. In any event, pressing an individual channel mute button accomplishes two things at once - it removes the signal from the main stereo bus and re-routes it to the aux stereo bus.

In any event, here's how you can route four sources to four different / individual outputs:

Channel one (let's assume it's the kick mic): Unmute the channel, pan hard left. It will come out of the main left stereo output only.

Channel two (assuming snare mic): Unmute the channel, pan hard right. It will come out the main right stereo output only.

Channel three (overhead mic?): MUTE the channel and pan it hard left. It will come out of the left Aux 3/4 output only.

Channel four (bass Gtr or whatever...): MUTE the channel and pan it hard right. It will come out of the right Aux 3/4 output only.

Some of the inexpensive and smaller Mackie's use a similar psuedo-four bus output setup and function in a similar manner.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm glad the ADAT card is working well for you.

Phil-

Thank you once again! Here's a silly question, would a patchbay make all this easier?

Also, do Adats record in stereo or mono for each track?

Additonally, we have a lot of re-patching to do to make this work, don't we?

Lastly, have you heard anything about the Alesis Studio32 mixer? I've read mixed reviews about them but it would be exactly what we need for a 16 track project studio, wouldn't it?

Thanks!

Sorry about the double post, don't know how that happened?!
