Pre-amp woes, ART Pro Channel vs. DBX 576

Recommended Posts

I have narrowed down my search for a new Tube based Mic-pre, comp, and EQ to these two units. There is virtually Zero reviews on either, I have searched and searched and searched. I have been reading about each for days(I downloaded the manuals for both) now and would like to purchase one. They are so close in so many ways. I like the Pro MPA and the Pro VLA very much for my setup but have not heard enough about DBX to make a sound choice. Any Help, any real life experience will be much appreciated. I bought an returned the Joe Meek VCQ1 last month, I found it awesome for Bass but terribly dark for vocals. Very little transparency with my style of recording.

Thank you very much.

Thanks,

Yes I heard the same thing about the DBX being muddy, though my source used the word 'fuzzy' in the upper gain stages. Hmmm. I know that so many 'snobbish' engineers really put down the ART Pro line. I still can't figure out why. I decided long ago not let brand name recogonition persuade my buying power.

Cheers.

If you have narrowed it down to only 2 choices: try them both IRL, and use some pre´s you are familiar with as a reference. Do try to make a blind comparison, you will need some assistance but it will be well worth the hassle.

BTW have you looked at the SPL tube/hybrid pre?

What do we want? Procrastination!

When do we want it? Later!

Hey Mats,

I have never heard of SPL? I went searching after I read your post but found nothing. I went ahead and ordered the ART Pro Channel. Fits in perfectly with the rest of my Prosumer gear. I like the gain stages of the ART stuff and can rely on the tones and performance.

Cheers.

prorec.com has a review of the ART Pro Channel. The Rip Rowan guy said he expected to dislike it but it was the biggest surprize he'd had in a piece of gear in quite some time. Said he could get a tube mic sound out of an AT 4033 and loved it on bass.

I also sent a Joe Meek VC-1 back after a day and a half. That thing sounded absolutely horrible on everything except mandolin in my tests. I hated that 300 to 600 Hz accentuation with no way to get rid of it (crap EQ section). The only thing I liked about it was the compressor, but to my ear, it sounded almost exactly like Craig's compressor design from 'Electronic Projects for Musicians.'

Anyway, I'd love to hear your impressions of the Pro Channel, there's not much out there about it. One thing, you hardly ever see them for sale used. Maybe people who buy em like em.
