I'm going to go out on a limb here, and I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't trust you guys and gals to keep a secret (not like this is a public forum or anything), but I *LOVE* my accordion. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I just dig the sound and control you get over the instrument moreso than any keyboard I've ever played. All synths and samplers (and I've played a lot) just don't compare. It's way more fun and expressive than playing a baby grand piano. And the accordion is *LOUD* -- it's like strapping a Marshall onto your chest...

I don't really understand all the hatred towards the instrument, though... Maybe it's because I never really watched Lawrence Welk. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif But I do dig Zydeco/Cajun music, the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it Be Nice" (yes, there's an accordion in there), and the use of accordion as a texture in folky/acoustic-type stuff.

OK, back to practicing something cool, like my guitar... And no, we don't need an accordion forum... Maybe a 12-step program, though... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Don't forget The Beatles "We can work it out"....

Actually, I like the melodic French style of accordion playing...you know, the kind that makes you feel like you're on some sidewalk cafe drinking wine with some Madamoiselle...(sp?) http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

But, Zydeco rocks...and yes, in a way it's just a harmonica with a bellows. Hmmm.."blues accordion"

I dig the French-style musette playing too... It's used on Rickie Lee Jones' "Pop Pop" album to great effect...

And I forgot about Brazillian and African music, which often has accordion-like instruments...

And for Zydeco/Cajun music... When I heard Buckwheat Zydeco doing "Hot Tamale Baby" years ago on a Keyboard magazine sound page (remember *those*?!?!?!), it turned me into a believer... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Tedster -

I believe that was George Martin playing harmonium ( pump organ) on "We Can Work it Out" . Somebody correct me if I err, but I've read it several places, & it sure sounds like one to my flawed ears.

Yup, it was a Harmonium on "We Can Work It Out". "Down At The Twist and Shout" by Mary Chapin Carpenter was an accordion... Lots of cool use of that instrument in Cajun and Zydeco...

BTW, I vote for Weird Al as moderator... should be a HOOT!

No joke -- I knew a foreign exchange student with a MIDIfied accordion. *Why* he bothered getting it MIDIfied, I have no idea.

Haven't yet run across someone with a S/PDIF accordion, tho'... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ahh...harmonium...that makes sense. But the Beatles did use a lot of weird instruments...notwithstanding the Indian stuff on Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour...those albums also sported stuff like bass harmonicas and things...
