AM I A DOPE OR WHAT or CHECK YOUR NTKs

Recommended Posts

I'm the new guy who started the NTK??????? post!

Just got back from exchanging my NTK (had many yuks)!

Well' the joke's on ME, after looking at my new ones (yes I've got 2 now!, am I a good boy?), the "shipping popcorn" appears to be the SHOCK MOUNTING!!!!!!! (kind of like a cheapie ear plug material).

Anyway, in the first NTK this piece was at an angle touching the front of the diaphram and the mesh, needless to say I wasn't very impressed with the mic. the second is good, the "ear plug" is positioned above diaphram

with the other end at the top of the mic (providing slight pressure, hence my shock mount assumption), in the third mic the "ear plug" is at an angle

almost touching rear of the diaphram!!!!!!!

I hope I'm not being ANAL but I thought you guys might want to have a look at YOUR NTKs and be sure nothing is touching something it shouldn't (it's gotta those BIG cans of FOSTERS mates!).

Superphat, jnorman, mattzen, THANKS, you guys probably saved me BIG amounts of time, I knew something was wrong from your responses!!!!!!!

I'll be using the NTKs with dbx and behringer "tube" pre's (I know, I know but I can't afford an AVALON right now!)

I'd love to build a REAL tube pre, SCHEMATICS ANYONE??????? PLEASE???????

(I'm qualified!) THANKS AGAIN.......

P.S. time to play in NTK STEREO! Later....... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif

Yup. I'm aware of this design although it hasen't seemed to cause me any problems. It is indeed a shock mount for the capsule. The review at prorec.com and in MIX mag do point to this design. Neither point ot it as a flaw though. Give an update as to how you new mics are....

I hope, for your sake and Rode's sake, they are fine....I would hate to see this be a design flaw that prevents this mic getting the use it deserves.

Good Luck!!

Hey Tazz,

Congrats on the mic...Here's my 2 cents,

You'd probably be better off bypassing the Berhinger pre-amp in favor of just a inexpensive solid state pre, or the pre's on your mixer, or direct to tape - if possible, seeing as how the NTK is a tube mic anyway (is it not?), and the specs. on the Berhinger will be the "sonic bottleneck", if used with your "cool daddy-o" mic.

In two days, it won't matter.

As I mentioned in your other thread, mine had the foam peice loose when I first pulled it out of the box, so apparently this is something Rode should be made aware of. I plan on calling or emailing them regarding it. I opened mine up after being pointed to the Prorec review by someone over on George's (?) forum, and I reglued the thing back where it belongs and it's worked great ever since. I looked at the capsule just to be sure, and it doesn't look like it scratched or damaged it in any way, but it isn't something I'd want floating around inside there near such a sensitive part, so I'd recommend anyone who is considering getting a NTK (or who already has) to check and make sure you don't have this problem with yours.

Other than that, I can recommend this mic wholeheartedly. It's a very nice sounding mic, and is otherwise built like a tank.

It's me again, thanks everyone!

Well I spent some time yesterday "testing" the NTKs (I didn't worry much about placement etc. just having fun!)

The best results I got were with an acoustic and vocal,(Put one mic facing

the fingerboard and soundhole, with the other mic I used a homemade pop filter, very heavy duty, with this I was able to get right up to the mic,

MY GOD! What a vocal sound! smooth, lots of detail, too bad I didn't put

more time into the guitar sound!!!!!!!)

Also did some X/Y stuff on a Marshall 50watt (EL34s) with an old Fender

bassman cab, I used a Fernandes sustainer guitar, no FX, I varied the distance of the NTR pair, again just experimenting, also had a 57 dead center on the bottom speaker less than a foot away, listened back panned hard L/R on the NTKs, straight up on the 57, MAKES RAMMSTIEN SOUND LIKE SURF GUITARS! MAN!!!!!!! Then I applied FX.......

This was all into DBX 386 (spdif out w monster cable) to VS1680s, a Crown

amp and JBL 4412s

One thing I do notice is a VERY SUBTLE difference between the 2 NTKs, but I'm willing to wager if I open them up and carefully line up the "ear plugs".......

Mattzen, I agree, they may be a bit bright! But I did find that simply

changing placement helped, at least on my guitar amp experiment!

Hippie, I kind of lucked into the Behringer and probably won't ever even

plug the NTKs into it, but it does make some drum samples KICK ASS and IS

an improvement over the Roland pre's, But I do hear ya!!!!!!!

Phil, I came up with thought of glueing the "ear plug" also, I can't speak for you, but I will gladly take 2 SM2s as MY consulting fee! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Also thanks for sending me over to the review!!!!!!!

(Yes, the RODE Barry White model!)

If any one can share their experience using these mics (X/Y etc.......)I'd be forever grateful!

Anyway, I'm digging the mics, I've had a grin on my face for a couple of days (I've found this amussing), But now I have a BIG SMILE!

Thanks again to all.......
