Anderton
Sometimes I'm a little slow picking up on things. I tried out internet radio years ago, and it sucked, so I kind of forgot about it. Then today I wnet to check out a friend's radio station and ended up on Live365.com. Oh boy. I found a station that broadcasts Soca and similar music 24/7. And an African world music station...and some cool trance stuff...Jamaican dancehall...all stuff I love, and would NEVER find on AM or FM radio here. Even at 28K, the quality is good enough. Then I heard this great Soca tune and noticed a "Buy Here" button. Clicked on it, and went to Amazon.com. A few minutes later, I ended up having Soca 2001 sent to me. I'm sure a lot of you are already doing this and getting a quiet chuckle at how behind the times I've been. But for those who haven't checked out internet radio, it's incredible. Tedster
Yep, Craigster...I've been listening to sonicnet.com...I think it's owned by MTV networks, but the selection has nothing whatsoever to do with MTV. A lot of really good stuff there, too, worth checking out! And when they do play a song by a name, it's something you usually haven't heard, or don't hear often... alphajerk
craig, have you checked out echo.com? is a very cool system that works off your tastes and modify's its playlist to suit what you like. btw, the station i am trying to save right now does play jamacian dancehall on sunday nights. of course it wont in a couple weeks with liberty media takes over and all we will get are the 24 songs over and over... alphajerk FATcompilation "if god is truly just, i tremble for the fate of my country" -thomas jefferson
alphajerk
oh, and some of us still have dialup so internet radio is about as useless as a girl is to a gay man. alphajerk FATcompilation "if god is truly just, i tremble for the fate of my country" -thomas jefferson
Lee Flier
Ohhh I know, echo.com is the worst (that is, if you're trying not to become addicted)! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif And I have broadband so that makes it that much more dangerous! Internet radio definitely rules. --Lee
John Worthington
Internet radio is one of the things that gives me hope. Maybe we'll get freed from all of the boring, stagnant, yuck music on broadcast radio. Seems like this is a great tie in to the Courtney Love topic on Chris & Ed's board. People who want to do things differently can release their own music. They can set up their own radio stations on the internet. There really are no excuses any more. You might not have the marketing hype of Sony behind you, but most people never get that anyway. jw Affiliations: Jambé

Anderton
>>oh, and some of us still have dialup so internet radio is about as useless as a girl is to a gay man. << I'm doing all this with 28K. A lot of stations will stream just fine at that lowly rate, including the ones I mentioned. Give it a try. Anderton
<> I think I'm going to try the satellite approach...I'm getting DirectTV installed this week, 'cause it's cheaper than cable and I get 5 times as many channels! I know the upload is slow -- which is a real problem, given what I do on the site -- but being to download stuff fast is a helluva iincentive. Mats Nermark
Not only is Internet Radio addictive, it's also very expensive. In Sweden the phone companies charge you for local calls as well as for long distance. First there is a connection charge and then they charge you per minute. I would love to listen to the Internet Radio more but I simply can't afford to. I think I need it even more because in Sweden we only have 4 government owned/operated radio channels and sine some years back 3-4 government approved "commercial" channels. I've heard that pages are cached on their satellite, and aren't always up to date, but the service faster. I have heard from some folks that DirectPC does have slowdowns that can be significant. Craig, good luck! I know you'll enjoy all the audio-only music stations that come wit satellite service!
kkehrermsn.com
Welcome to the party Craig. I even set up my own station on live365 Kamakaze Radio(cheap plug). there's also SonicBox which is a nifty graphic radio station interface. Kamakaze
alphajerk
i doubt its what he is talking about considering its not even out yet [supposedly due out this month]. directPC exists now but as a DIALUP connection, this is the first SATELLITE TRANSMITTING unit sold. hopefully it will be out soon, i dont think i would waste the $$$ on directPC with the phone dialup with this thing coming out. now if the unit wasnt $800... alphajerk FATcompilation "if god is truly just, i tremble for the fate of my country" -thomas jefferson
wilpye
I just read the The Webcasters Strike Back on the homepage here, and I hate to ask a banker's dumb question, but how do these webcasters actually make money? Aren't they ad free? There wouldn't be a huge legal dispute if both sides weren't fighting over greenbacks. In suit language, what gives them revenue to offset their expenses? Does anybody on the forum know?

John Worthington
There are really only 3 business models that keep floating around the internet. The first is advertising. As someone who was VP of Engineering/CTO for one of the early internet advertising firms, I'd say don't get your hopes up. The second is subscriptions. Might work if you're popular. Todd Rundgren is trying this as are several other people. So far, it's been hard to get people to buy a subscription to anything other than porn. The last is the give away model. This says that you're going to make most of your money from playing live and selling CDs and swag at the gigs. The internet becomes the place to get the hype going and get people coming to the gigs. It also provide a place for people to pickup the CD they would have bought at the gig if the line weren't too long. I'm a big believer in the last two models. I can believe using the net and webcasting as a marketing tool. I can almost see the subscription model if you include it with something tangible. Buy our CD and get the first year free. Then you promo the crap out of the next CD and hope you sell it. As far as the big webcasters, all of them are either having financial models or are getting bought up by majors. Virgin's been pretty smart with the RadioFreeVirgin site. Why worry about sucking up to ClearChannel if you can start reaching people with the web. Then you get to control the playlist. I'd imagine that there's another benefit to this. It's harder to charge payola back as a recoupable to the artist. The streaming site would be a direct marketing expense. jw Affiliations: Jambé
alphajerk
okay john, just to make sure everyone understands this [and hopefully it isnt a part of my hallucinatory dream] this unit is BOTH upstream and downstream... no modem needed, no phone line needed. im quite excited about because whilei could get the DL only version, my work requires UL as well, sometimes hefty files. this basically UL's at the speed of ISDN [128, 4X faster than dialup] for a price cheaper than a ISDN connection. so how are those stock options doing john? alphajerk FATcompilation "if god is truly just, i tremble for the fate of my country" -thomas jefferson
