jraffertyuswest.net
Why do none of my Plugin meters actually match my audio? They actually seem to trigger BEFORE the audio event. Is there a way to calibrate this? I am using ABIT Kt7, athlon thunderbird 700, ibm hard drive, cakewalk, waves, TC electronics. Thanks for any info, -Josh. Anderton
Good question! What's happening is the #1 public enemy of digital audio, latency (a fancy word for "delay" so you don't feel so bad...like calling something a piece of "legacy gear" as opposed to "worthless doorstop"). You're hearing the audio after the delay caused by your system, whereas the meters are hooked right into where the processing is happening. Seems there should be a software switch to let you see the audio on the way out of the sound card, not just within the processor. To minimize latency, go the web and make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card, and experiment with buffer settings to try to acheive the lowest possible latency. Case in point: when I first installed Sonar, the latency was a totally unacceptable 250 ms. A few tweaks later, I got it down to 17 ms, and expect I can get it down a bit further. masternfool
Also...make sure your program or plugins aren't set for LOOKAHEAD... mine has the option especially when doing compression and limiting. Harry
