OMS+FreeMIDI+Reason+B4+DP = HELP!

Recommended Posts

O.k. I just installed Reason in my Mac and I'm experiencing side problems.

1st off, My B4 software all of a sudden, doesn't recognize my mod wheel??

I assume this has something to do with now having OMS installed (required for Reason). In my Free-MIDI pref panel, I have - "allow other apps" checked. Also, my PCI console for my MOTU 2408 won't open any more.

It seems like both OMS and FreeMIDI are fighting - and I'm the one losing!

I really like Reason, but I just wish it wouldn't be such a chore to install one new piece of software, especially when it Fucks up my existing system.

This is a frequent source of problems in Mac systems. Contact Propellerheads for support, they may know of some workaround...sometimes something that involves re-installing programs in a different order.

O.K. I've managed to get the Mod wheel thing sorted out. I had to rework the preferences in both OMS and FreeMIDI. Also, if using DP and Reason at the same time, DP must be launched BEFORE Reason.

Now I'm just trying to sort out the PCI-324 problems. I've e-mailed MOTU support and hopefully they'll be able to help.

On a side note - Reason is really fantastic. I really see myself doing a lot of loop design/writing in Reason, and importing to DP for hard core mixing. I works really great in conjunction with Recycle.

My recollection is that OMS should be installed prior to FreeMIDI. I can't be certain, but it seems that FreeMIDI would be flexible enough to work around a pre-existing OMS installation rather than the other way around.

Enthusiasm powers the world.

Wow, glad I read this thread. Please keep posting your updates. I just got Reason and DP, and hit the same thing you were talking about. I'm trying to be safe and loading the stuff on a different partition, with OS 9. I have been running 8.5.1, with no problems, and now I'm trying to run 9 with new apps and an additional monitor. Yuck.

You just saved me a headache. Thanks.

I'm using OS 9 too (very slow booting)and everything seems pretty smooth now. My biggest problem is the ASIO driver thing. For some reason, I can't seem to route audio to different outputs on my MOTU 2408MKII. It looks like the Reason 1.01 update might fix that. Right now, I'm running stereo out of reaon thorugh the Apple sound manager to output 1&2 on the 2408. It's not really a big problem though. I've been bouncing individual tracks to DP and mixing in there with plug ins etc...

Andrew, very interesting. Can you get audio dirrectly to the 2408 in Reason? Not sure if you were taking the line out of the mac to the 2408. I am getting my output from my 1212 (ok, I'm still using this, but it works!), have not tried bussing to anything except the analog outs. I'll try this weekend and see what I come up with.

ABECK.... this is a related question but I can't get my sustain pedal to work with the B4 while in DP. Did you find a workaround in FreeMidi to allow this? (I know real B3s don't have sustain pedals, but it works right at my pal's studio...) OMS is off. How did you set your Free Midi prefs to get the mod wheel to work?

Thanksin advance for any help.

Here's what my settings look like:

In B4: INPUT - Studio 90plus OUTPUT - none

MIDI through (checked)

Upper Manual (1) Lower (2) Pedal (3)

MIDI INPUT FILTER : CONTROL CHANGE (not checked - when this WAS checked, my mod wheel didn't work!)

PROGRAM CHANGE: (ckecked)

MIDI OUTPUT FILTER: (both boxes checked)

in Free MIDI studio setup:

I just have my Studio90plus set up as a "controller"

My pedal works both in standalone version, and when DP is running.

What type of keyboard are you using? Try different settings in FreeMIDI studio setup.
