LiveMusic
Do radio stations rent batches of songs? Seems that I will hear several songs that I haven't heard in years... and I'll hear them several times in a week. After a short period, maybe a week or more, then I don't hear them anymore. What's going on with that? I notice it a lot. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
GY
Yes. They subscribe to music libraries. That's why (if you listen long enough) you'll hear the same batch of songs over and over. They pay a blanket license so they don't have to do a bunch of paper work. Most of these stations are automated. GY
LiveMusic
How do they get these songs? Are they on "regular" CDs or on removable hard drives or what? Thanks. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
Guest
What generally happens is that the record co's "service" the stations with the music, and bring in monthly new releases to be added to the stations' playlists (generally accompanied by contra to sweeten the deal). In addition, if the stations copy of, say, Led Zepp III is damaged they'll get a fresh copy (for nix, of course). Where networks stations are concerned, the playlist is generated from a "hub" station, and the music will then either be played via their satelite/ISDN feed, or played locally with the town's fav announcers. Where commercial networks are concerned, they'll often have a local breakfast show, then network day-parts over diff shifts. What some stations have are "hit-disks" which are compilation CD's fed off to their brethren stations and affiliates, hence your suggestion that you're hearing the same songs. Of course, what many people *don't* realize is that the stations music program (most often called "selector") only has a programmed 'universe' of 600-700 songs, generating that hit-factor. This is pretty much the norm for cap-city stations, which in general have a moderate TSL (time spent listening) figure. Then they'll move outside that for their "Hot 30/Classic 9@9" bullshit. That's from my experience, anyhow, and that spanned 10 years with one of the world's biggest....and most fucked http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif Cheers Rick
