Take this job and shove it

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone -

Despite the fact that I've been digesting the priceless information in this forum, I've been a relatively quiet participant in this group. This is something that I have to share, though -

I just quit my corporate job to go on the road with a band. I'm nervous as hell at the thought of not having something as cushy as a corporate salary (I'm also thrilled that I no longer have to abide by their ludicrous standards and unethical behavior). Nonetheless, the musicians I'm playing with are some of the best I have ever played with, whose talents in many ways stretch far beyond mine. The exposure I'll get from this group astounds me (in June we open for John Scofield - yikes!) and will also make me a better musician.

Wish me luck - my fingers and toes are all crossed.

-- Jimmy

Jimmy, congrats, man. I've been laboring over a similar decision so I know it's a scary situation. Just remember that it's still the real world and there will be hurdles along the way, but, that in know way means it was a mistake. Roll with them and don't look back. Best wishes and keep us posted. What's happiness worth?

Also, remember that perseverence furthers. There will be many times you'll think you made the wrong decision. But 10 years from now, there will be no doubt in your mind that you made the right decision.

Yeah! Probably got a lot of quizzical looks from the guys in the office, huh?

So how does one find such a gig in which one opens for Scofield?

The gig just sorta fell into my lap. I got the gig the same day that Dr. Dan (the guy I'm playing with) hired me. Dan did an album with Scofield not long ago, and a mutual friend who is a promoter for the hall we're playing in set up the gig.

He also mentioned that we were opening for Derek Trucks in August and another band called Project Z, which feature some of the best players in the Atlanta area, several times in June.

I made a similar decision back in '86. I quit my comfy job and did the full time band thing. I did it for 4 years and had the best freaking time of my life! We did not become hedonistic rock stars are planned, but we had one hell of a good time, and I never regretted doing it. It made me a much better player from doing it day in and day out, and when I did return to the "corporate world", I felt OK about it. Here are some tips I learned:

1. Don't party too much.

2. A lot of women is not necessarily a good thing. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

3. Get paid up front.

4. Only do gigs that will get you better gigs.

5. Be absent during set-up & break-down, or hire roadies.

Good luck,

-Hippie

In two days, it won't matter.

Hi Jimmy:

If nothing else, have a blast! I was on the road a lot a decade ago, and loved it, despite its hardships, etc. Hours and hours of driving lying on top of the gear with my nose pressed against the roof of the van, etc...in retrospect, despite not much $$ and creature comforts, it was an experience I would never have given up!

And, yes, many women are not necessarily good... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Best of luck and have a great time!

Good luck with your new career!, it is always a smart thing to grab a chance to do what you _really_ want to do - or else you might regret it deeply later on.

I know a guy that was a CEO at a medium sized company, he got fed up and quit to go on the road with a traveling carnival (!). Today he is happier than ever, and he knows who's his real friends are - turned out that many of his old "friends" where just butt-kissers. So much for "real" jobs.

Listen to your heart!

I love Dr. Dan and have worked/partied with him a bunch in Tallahassee. What do you play?

ps for those that don't know, Dr. Dan (and crew) is a bad ass funky keys/clav/moog etc. player and his show is a must see.

Hi Kris!

I'm the bassist in the group. We'll be back at Tallahassee at Potbellies on Friday, June 22.

Thanx for the props as well!
