DAW-in-the-closet insulation questions

Recommended Posts

I recently put my computer in the closet, and the noise from the fan/hard drives has been lessened somewhat, but I still have some questions...

1) I'm in an apartment and the doors on the closet have slots for ventilation... (They're folding doors, consisting of six panels. The slots take up approx. 3' x 1' on each panel.) Sound unfortunately still leaks out of the slots, and I want to cover them up with something.

Should I use insulation? Blankets? Something else? I'm looking for a low cost solution which will be easy to clean up once I move out.

2) I have the computer sitting on the floor in the closet, and I notice that I can hear the hard drives accessing info via vibrations in the floor. I'm thinking of putting a small table in the closet and putting the computer on top... Is there anything else I can do to cut down on the vibrations?

Thanks!

popmusic,

Blankets might work. But of course they are not airtight so some sound will still get through. Cheaper, and maybe even better, is to get a heavy painter's plastic drop cloth, and hang that over the openings.

If you walk into the closet and pick up the computer, does the vibration and rumble go away or at least get reduced? If so, you don't need a table. First try putting the computer on a small (empty) cardboard carton. If that's not good enough, get a piece of 2x4-foot fiberglass ceiling tile, fold it in half to double the thickness and make it only 2x2, and put the computer on that. But it HAS to be fiberglass. Not the compressed / woven paper-based stuff.
