sign
Yesterday i was at Amsterdam AES, listening to as much gear as possible. Listened to the sound coming from the new Mackie, Tascam MX2424, and a couple of others. I could not listen to the new Fostex D2424, could only "see" the sound on computer screen. There was sound everywhere and in fact i am a little disapointed about the most i have heard. Most of it was rather harsh and edgy. The best sound i have heard was from the Sony DSD machine. My question to you is: what is the best sound you have listened to lately and where was it coming from? I can tell you the best sound i've listened to this week was not the Sony DSD at AES, it was a recording from 1956!! from a female singer and it was coming from an old Ampex tube tapemachine. Thanx. jnorman
well, this is probably off the wall, but i went to a party for a retiring banker at his house (a small mansion). in his media room, he had something i had not seen for many years. his setup included a pair of the original tri-fold magnaplanar screens, tri-amped with macintosh tube power amps, a macintosh preamp, and a powered sub (unmarked - i dont know what it was). anyway, he played a CD of a string quartet, and all of a sudden i remembered why i used to like magnaplanars so much - the sound was absolutely unbelievable - completely transparent. you could walk right up to the speakers and you could swear the quartet was actually sitting right behind them playing live. the bipolar radiation provided a spacious realism that rivalled my own surround system. i havent heard audio that way in years. jnorman sunridge studios salem, oregon

sign
Hey you guys, although i laughed my pants of a couple of times (this is a dutch saying), i was hoping you guys were taking my question seriously. It seems to me that some professional audio people like you don't like DSD or analog gear or something like that, but more the (beautifull) sound of their farting in the morning (in case of there is some bad english, please forgive me, for i'm a stupid dutch newbee). I agree the sound of your newborn child is the most beautifull sound on the planet Steve, take great care and give him as much love as you can. Enjoy yourself cause before you realise, he drives your car. And you botch guy, who said "yes" and to what? explain this, just curious. Hey John, how was that fish? Now about the Amsterdam AES, i really was hoping to hear some outstanding sounds there but the only good sound was not better than a good sounding vinyl i guess. Why is the sound of an old Ampex tube tapemachine still so much better than even the best DAT/CDR ? Why is the sound of an almost 50 year old machine so damn good? Why is the almost 80 year old tube technology so popular? Listen to the Tubetech multiband compressor and you know what i mean don't you? I am going to purchase a digital harddisc machine, perhaps the Radar, MX2424 or some other, i dont know yet, i still don't like the sound of this kind of gear but i think i should have it anyway. What are your experiences with this gear, do you guys like the sound of it? I intend to keep my two 2" machines anyway. Thanx a lot. Peace to you all (and your president). Duhduh
Originally posted by sign: Yo Steve, Congrats to you and your lady, did you record that sound??? Greetz. Steve Vai recorded the sound of his baby being born and put it on a record. I cant remember which one right now, but it was pretty cool. I'd have to say the best sounding production I've heard in a while is the new Rammstein. God, I just LOVE their productions! Anyone know who engineered that or what they were using? KenElevenShadows
Congrats on the baby!!! In Burma, the sound of the engine kicking in as the wheels left the pavement is one of the most beautiful sounds I've heard lately. In a nutshell, we met Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the Democratic party in Burma that is currently for all practical purposes under house arrest by the brutal military dictatorship running the country -- despite the fact that she won the election. After meeting her (which btw, was not easy to do), we were photographed and followed by two days by the Burmese military. Our friend, who went on ahead of us to fly to a different location, was searched and had a lot of her belongings confiscated, mostly film and tape recordings. Determined not to have the same fate befall us, I had lots of "decoy" film. However, for some reason, we were spared a search. We waited in the airport for a couple of nail-biting hours, and then boarded the plane... ...and the sound of the engine kicking in as the wheels left the pavement is one of the most beautiful sounds I've heard lately. ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/nectar ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ music*travel photos*tibet*lots of stuff "Sangsara" "Irian Jaya" & d i t h er CDs available! http://www.elevenshadows.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ken Lee Photography - photos and books Eleven Shadows ambient music The Mercury Seven-cool spacey music Linktree to various sites Instagram Nightaxians Video Podcast Eleven Shadows website Ken Lee Photography Pinterest Page
Lee Flier
Sign, I agree with you FWIW. I haven't heard anything yet to rival the sound of an old Ampex recorder (one of which I have sitting in my basement). Not that I don't use digital recorders, and we all work hard to get them to sound better, and eventually they'll catch up. But for now... oh well. I like to record a lot of my individual tracks on the Ampex on the way into my digital recorder. Nice way to cheat, huh? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif --Lee
Alndln
Lee,if you get a chance and some extra $$ try Magneto,a tape emulation plug in made by Steinberg, while not a real replacement for the Ampex, quite convincing nonetheless.
