Looking for a second pair of affordable powered monitors...

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I currently use a pair of Event PS8's for monitoring (I absolutely love 'em), but I would like to get a second pair of speakers for tracking.

My home studio is set-up like a horseshoe, and my monitors sit on 42" stands above my keyboard rig (adjacent to the DAW). From a mixing perspective it makes more sense to place them around the DAW. From a practicing and writing standpoint, it's best to have them on top of the keyboards.

If I could find a decent pair of affordable monitors, I would move the Events to the DAW console, and put the new monitors above my keyboards. As much as I like my Events, I wouldn't buy a second pair, as I think a different set of speakers might provide another perspective on mixes.

I've looked at KRK's (expensive) as well as Yamaha MSP-5's, but I haven't found what I'm looking for. I also used to own a pair of Alesis M1 Actives, and I hated them.

Any suggestions?

I have, among some other monitors, a pair of HHB Active Circle 3's. They are very dependable and much better than can be expected at this price. They are smooth on the ear and does not sound hyped or exaggerated.

BTW, according to the Swedish HHB agent, The Swedish national broadcasting corporation (SR P2) bought 40 pairs of them last year for their classical + jazz departments - a statement as good as any, SR is very picky when it comes to equipment.

I recommend that you try a pair of HHB Circle 3A's for a couple of days.

I have a pair of JBL LSR-25P powered monitors. Smooth, detailed, can play loud without crapping out. They go for about US$325 each, and I bough my pair when JBL was doing a $100 rebate on them. Don't think that's still on, but they' still IMHO smoke anything in their price class.

In Sweden, the list price is $ 595 a pair excluding sales tax. I expect them to be less in UK & USA, also you know the deal about list prices, don't you? ;-)
