Why do some CD's work and some don't?

Recommended Posts

I have Memorex CD-R CD's and on some players they won't play or I'll get audio that sounds like theres a lot of static on the recording. Now, they play well on my Sony Walkman and on other players.

So my question is : why does this happen? Any links suggestions? Why do the CD's I buy never have a problem? Any detailed help on this would be great. :<

I have a stand-alone CD burner and one in my PC. The stand-alone model has a lot of problems when I use standard "data" CD blanks. I have to buy the "audio only" CD's for it to record without errors, and I have a Maxell CD lens cleaner that I have to use often, or else I'll be making coasters. The CD burner in my PC, I only use for audio file, (Cakewalk .bun), backups.

I had to retire a 600.00 Denon CD player, and swap it out with a 99.00 Sony CD player, because the firmware in the Denon would not play home-burned CD's. If you are having problems playing your CD's in other players, it may be an older CD player, made for only "red-book" CD's.

Good luck,

-Hippie

In two days, it won't matter.

I have an old Akai CD player which I believe was made around '85 or so. It literally spat out CDs burned on my friend's Macintosh -- the door would fly open with the CD spinning violently around. Didn't do it to any other CDs. The CDs would play well on all the newer CD players, and even on the Discman.

BTW, I have a question -- I just got a G4 with the internal CD burner that it comes with. Is it possible to use Toast (or some other program) instead of iTunes? Any suggestions? It would be nice to be able to set my own ID marks, etc. and have more control over the final CD. Thanks.

When the consumer electronics manufacturers decided to introduce cd burners, they ran into MAJOR resistance from the music industry execs who realized each one was a little "cd factory".

So they asked for and got two "features" added to stand alone "music cd burners".

1) In order to use these devices, you have to use "audio cd's". These cost on average about a buck more per cd than "data cd's". Other than some kind of code that "tells" the audio burner it is an audio cd, there's no difference... And the extra "buck"? It gets paid into a fund that the music industry splits... Nice huh?

2) The second "feature" is that you can only make a copy of a "master" cd. Not copies of copies. So... if your friend burns you a copy of a commercial cd, and you want to make another copy say... as a backup... sorry... a "music cd burner" can't do it.

Ironically the "cat was out of the bag" as far as data or computer burners were concerned... so you can use the cheaper blank data cd's, make however many backups of your music as you want... and no $'s for the labels...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
