Anderton
Interesting you should say that, I get the joke but it got me thinking...I've heard some orchestras that IMHO were more or less hacks, and others that put real fire into what they did. So to some extent, this is illuminating: it's not really the material so much that's the issue -- the score can be the same in either case -- but the performance. "It's the singer, not the song." robsmusic
I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else here, but , to my knowledge, Nickolodeon is owned by MTV. It was only a matter of time before they would start to indoctrinate the youth with MTV sensibilities. Some might say it's a carefully planned marketing effort to create the future MTV audience. AutoTune is everybody's favorite whipping boy, and it's a stupid attitude, because the program gets blamed for lots of stuff it doesn't even do. That honking vocal on Cher's song - and all of the miserable copies I hear on the radio these days. I can almost hear the angry mob forming, torches in hand. AUTOTUNE! AUTOTUNE! AUTOTUNE! But AutoTune wasn't even used on the song. A hardware vocoder from Digitech made the gastly sound that everyone HAS to have on their pathetic records. Walk down the street and pick ten people at random, and I'll show you nine people whose voices can't be salvaged by even the most extreme application of AutoTune. Ever heard of the Eventide Harmonizer? Ever see one in a studio or a live sound rack? Know what they use it for nine times out of ten? Okay. If you're gonna bash AutoTune, at least be consistent and bash Harmonizers, too. I've got an idea. Let's pull the frets out of all of our guitars! After all, if we were REAL musicians, we wouldn't need a crutch like FRETS to help us play in tune. Gus, keep the faith. There's a storm of negativity on this board this week, but it should blow over soon. With all respect Dan. I just watched a special about Cher's 40 years career on TV. It says she recorded 'Believe' in a small studio in London with a guy named Mark Tailor? (I'm not sure about the name) a 28 yr old engineer. And he actually showed how he did it with an AUTOTUNE plugin. The White Stripes are becoming increasingly popular. They're a sister/brother group from Detroit who play blues rock. Sister plays drums and is the most minimalist drummer I've ever heard but goes with the music. Brother plays guitar and comes up with some great riffs and slide runs. It's just guitar and drum. Alot of people are starting to pay attention to them and have gotten into 'mainstream' magazines like Time, Entertainment Weekly, Mojo, and Rolling Stone. Whether or not that's a good thing is up in the air. They haven't signed to a major yet which I think plays a part to the level of exposure. Many bands I'm listening to now (I'm 17) refuse success. Godspeed You Black Emperor! won't give interviews or any media but was something like 13th out of the top 40 bands of 2000 "according to Spin". At the Drive-In broke-up after they started getting popular. I think most here would be surprised with what kids are listening to. At least in my area Ben Harper, Dave Matthews, Phish, Alkaline Trio, Weezer, Tool, Tom Petty, classic rock...Sure, the same people who like Ben Harper also listen to Ludicris but it seems that even rap music is getting better. Anyone hear N.E.R.D.? Backstreet Boys, Brittany, and rap play their roles. I don't go to the 'clubs' but I don't really think I'd see anyone dancing to Led Zeppelin or Tom Petty.
