Wire gauge for keyboard/guitar cables

Recommended Posts

I'm a complete newbie about this... I'm looking to build some cables for my home studio and I don't know which kind of cable I need to get.

I'm looking for the same kind of cable that the nice, heavy-duty keyboard/guitar cables are made of. Rubber tubing, two conductor cables where one wire is "wrapped" around another wire covered in plastic. (I'm running ungrounded cables, as most of the stuff I will be hooking up is unfortunately ungrounded.)

The problem is, I don't know what kind of gauge or specs I'm looking for. Can anyone offer any suggestions? (Links to places with good prices would also be appreciated too.)

Thanks!

C'mon, I *know* someone out there knows the answer to this one... Or should I have used the words "Live Sex" somewhere in my subject header? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I like the 3 wire, (16 gauge), stuff made by Beldon. You used to be able to by it by the roll, (its been a few years). And use Switchcraft connectors.

In two days, it won't matter.

Foam dielectric video cable with a stranded solid bare copper conductor (not copper clad steel) with a 95% copper braid makes a great unbal gtr/inst cable. Blows the pants off the fairy dust cables. I know several guys that have used this type, espcially for long distance runs to isolation rooms for gtr amps. The most flexible type will have a .035" wall matte PVC jacket without the second foil shield. There are several mfg's that make this type. You should be able to get it for about $.30 to $.40 a foot, less than you would pay for a lesser product that was marketed towards the high-end MI market.

Please correct me if I am wrong but in a home studio situation you can get away with unbalanced cables because the distances are short. I have used guitar cables in a pinch but I like my George L's.
