BrettS
Hello, Here's a question I've been wrestling with for months. I recently, finally got into digital recording, coming from a 4 track tape environment. I have a Sound Blaster Live that I use for MIDI and digital recording. Will any of these units allow motorized control/memorization of the mixing boards? I've just purchased Logic Audio Silver, for use on an AMD Athlon 600mHz machine, what's next? Well, I'm not sure WHICH control surface would be most useful, and I'm wondering if anyone has used more than one of these, or has comments? I hear good things about EzBus, and great things about Tascam support, but not much about Roland.... Recently I found out about the Roland/Edirol U-8, and also the Roland VM3100Pro, which features a PCI card with an R-Bus for routing 8 channels!!! It seems this would be more reliable then sending all that data out through a USB port, right? Can someone englighten me on the advantages/disadvantages of these units? Thanks in advance... ------------------ -Brett Vague Atmosphere ---------------- Poetry in Motion http://www.mp3.com/vagueatmosphere This message has been edited by BrettS on 04-27-2001 at 02:16 AM -Brett Vague Atmosphere ---------------- Poetry in Motion http://www.mp3.com/vagueatmosphere
Jeff Klopmeyer
Brett, as the head of marketing for one of the products you're inquiring about, you should take anything I have to say with a grain of salt. However (and anyone who knows otherwise correct me if I'm wrong), the EZ-Bus has never shipped. It doesn't exist. If you haven't seen it yet, there's some great info on our US-428 at our web site: http://www.tascam.com There's also an entire BBS forum dedicated to people using the US-428, which you can find on our site under the "Support" menu. Good luck with your decision. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
BrettS
Hi Jeff, Thanks for the info.... do you have any comment about how the Tascam works with the USB ports? I've heard that sometimes this can be a problem if you have a slower port - how you test this, I'm not sure? I have a brochure that shows the EzBus, and I think you can order it. I see it says available 4/15/01, but then when I click that it says backordered, available 5/30/01.... hmmm... What about the comment on the Roland, taking in 8 tracks via their R-Bus at the same time on the PCI card? Anyway, I'm already a Tascam user, I have an old Porta 05, that I did 4 track recording on years ago.... I enjoyed that product thoroughly, but it's time to get into the digital world! Thanks again - are there any comments out there on the Roland, or EzBus? ------------------ -Brett Vague Atmosphere ---------------- Poetry in Motion http://www.mp3.com/vagueatmosphere -Brett Vague Atmosphere ---------------- Poetry in Motion http://www.mp3.com/vagueatmosphere

On the PC side, you should make sure your USB implementation is of the UHCI instead of OHCI variety. Once again, check the US-428 info on the TASCAM site for all the details. russreign
Be sure to check out the feature on control surfaces in the upcoming issue of EQ... To the best of my knowledge, EZ-Bus is not currently shipping, and will be comercially available late summer... Music Is The Answer!

ian_dup1
Of the options you listed, the Roland studio pack is the best, but it is also a few hundred $ more expensive than the U-8 or US-428. The U-8 and US-428 are both good units. I like the construction of the US-428 better than than the U-8, and the US-428 also supports 24-bit digital audio. I've had no problems using it with my computer, and I am only running a Celeron-433. The U-8 is a little flimsier and is a little more stripped down in the input department, but it also has onboard effects which is a big bonus if you do not have any outboard effects gear.
