THD Hot Plate?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I posted this question over on rec.audio.pro also, but would like to hear what you good people have to say about these gadgets.

Does anybody here use the Hot Plate to get guitar sounds in their studio's? I'm looking to keep the spl's down and still drive the power tubes.

Likes? ... Dis-likes?

I'll probably get the 8 ohm model so I can use it with combo's and 1/2 stack's with the head set to 8 ohm's. From what I understand this will work fine as long as the speaker(s) have an equal or higher value (8 or 16 ohm).

Regards,

Tim L

I've used the hotplate b4 and was severly bummed that the balls that used to be in my amps (vibrolux-jcm800-ac30-matchless "jourgenson"-mesa rectifier) was GONE! I now use the marshall power brake and while still not great it is better than the THD Hotplate. I also use a Demeter speker box and it works great. It is a small enclosed (sealed) box with a 30 watt celestion, and a mic clip that I usually just stick a 57 in there and seal it up! Very tight sound, tons of balls, No power brake, and low outside SPL!

Don't take my advice though (I'm a picky MF) demo these units first.

When SPL isn't a concern I stick a 4038 in front of a marshall and turn it way up! Nothing better! except maybe a Royer which I haven't tried yet. Later Mike http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Mike, Do you use this live? If so, are you only hearing your own playing through the PA and monitors or do you have another amp on stage and running them A/B?

Approximately what does the Demeter box cost?

I don't use it live. I stopped trudging around ass loads of gear for no money a long time ago! Studio use only.

I don't know if it's still available though. I looked on their site and saw nothing. Later-Mike http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Off the subject a little, but does anyone have any experience using a Palmer speaker emulator? Actually there is no such thing but Mike Campbell said he uses one recording. Palmer makes a varity of devices. One allows you to go into the board after the guitar amp in lieu of the speakers. Someone sells Palmer in Nashville.
