AW4416 to Pro Tools

Recommended Posts

Hi,

A friend of mine asked me to sing some background vocals on a song that he is working on. He is recording to Pro Tools. I have a AW4416. He will send me a audio-CD of the song. I have planned to record the stereo-tracks to two tracks on the AW4416, and then sing on the last 14 tracks.

The question is: when I'm done and want to burn a CD with the data-files of 16 tracks, will my friend be able to load those tracks back into Pro Tools?

And what type of data-files will be on the CD?

Richard,

First of all you will need to make sure you have the latest OS on your AW4416, or the below option will not be available to you. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif The latest OS version is 1.21.

The AW does allow you to export tracks to WAV files. Then your friend will be able to read them back into Pro Tools. Just remember to export the tracks, don't just do a song backup. An export is somewhat more of a pain, but your friend will NOT be able to read a straight backup of an AW4416 song.

Then there's the issue of whether or not the tracks will be in sync with your friend's tracks when your friend puts them back into Pro Tools. There may be some way to ensure that they will be, but I'll defer to Phil on that one, since he syncs up AW's and computers and I don't (yet). http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks Lee,

Version 1.21 is now loaded. Everything seems to be working fine. Except when I start up the AW4416, at the very end of the starting-process, there is a pretty loud thundering sound coming out of my speakers. Have you experienced this?

Hi Richard,

I HAVE sometimes experienced a burst of digital noise when booting up the AW, ever since this latest OS upgrade. Odd. But then, from early experience I learned to keep my monitors down until I'd started up a song and I was sure that no digital noise was going to happen - the earlier OS's frequently had that happen when you started a song.

I will be reporting this problem to Yamaha tech support and I suggest you do the same.... the more we bug them, the faster they fix stuff. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

The wav-CD is done and loaded to protools. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually it ended up being several CDs. When I set the machine to burn "all tracks" a error message came up. It refused to burn all tracks. I had to pair up two and two tracks and burn them on eight CDs. I don't know why that happened, I did exactly as the instruction said (i think http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif).

Oh yeah Richard, I forgot to mention that this was another little snafu (the AW won't let you burn all tracks to WAV's even though it says it can). Yammy says it will be fixed in the next OS which is due out very shortly... keep your eyes on the Yamaha site for the download.

Glad it all worked out anyway though!

Because I transfe wav files into my DAW over lightpipe cables, I have never ran into this, but it seems that there's a bug in the AW os that prevents saving "all" WAV files in a single pass. Several AW users have ran into this before. It's supposed to be fixed in OS 1.3 (expected in early April).
