Vocals DI into PCs

Recommended Posts

I currently use the unusual (?) method of recording vocals through a Zoom, and then to PC. This gives a little compression and reverb.

BUT, the unit was not designed for this purpose, and I'm wondering whether the amp simulator is adversely affecting the vocal sound? If you think it does, then should I just DI to the PC, and add reverb etc using software instead?

Actually, you want to use a mic preamp. A DI won't give you the extra gain that a mic is missing. Your Zoom is bringing the volume up to a usable level. A good, quiet mic pre will bring the volume up without changing the sound, and then you can do whatever you want to it on the computer!

It doesn't matter whether a unit is designed for that purpose as long as it sounds cool (and suits your needs). If the amp simulator is adversely affecting the vocal sound, bypass it or stop using it. If it sounds cool, then who cares?? And I agree with the previous post about using a mic preamp to decrease noise, increase sound quality, yadda yadda yadda...
