1/2" or 1/4" analog 2 tracks for mixdown - recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to cross post, but I'm ready to go shopping, and I haven't had much in the way of replies on the other forums, so here goes:

I'd like a good 2 track analog deck. I'd prefer a 1/2" but will accept a 1/4" if it's ultra cool.

As you all probably know, I have two AW4416's locked up and digitally cascaded. I'd like to use the two track for the Anderton Analog effect on individual tracks, as well as for occasional tape delay and of course, for mixdowns.

So, because of those needs, it HAS to be a three head machine.

Otherwise, I'm open to suggestions... anyone?

Dude, totally get a Teac 3340. It's got three heads, and something called Simul-Sync... whatever that is. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'd look for a Studer A807 MkII 1/4" 2 track if I had the money. Mmmm good.

Does anyone know anything about the Revox A-700?

I'm on a 70's art-rock kick at the moment, and having ideas similar to Mr. O'Keefe's- Andertoning drum tracks, as well as using a tape machine as a musical instrument and effects device.

Lo and behold- an engineer at one of the national theaters is unloading old studio gear cheap, including a Revox A-700 with manual.

Just got the info today.

The guy bought a complete old studio and is dumping the gear he doesn't need. I've been checking prices against what's on the internet used markets, and they are all low.

The Revox plays back fine and at least looks to be well-cared for. At the equivalent of 55$, I'm thinking that the worst case scenario would be a groovy-looking bit of interior decoration with some noisy and funky effects possibilities.

Or am I just looking for an excuse to buy BASF products in support of their fine advertising campaign? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif (I'm just teasing, don't flame! What adults do with their bodies is their business, not mine, if you're wondering where my ship sails in that tempest in a teapot "controversy")

Hey Phil!

The Ampex ATR 102 is a great mixing and mastering machine. I say Ampex because you can still get parts for even the older Ampex tube machines 300, 350, etc. I use an ATR all the time. I occasionally mix to an Ampex 350-2 with great results. A 2 track 1/2 will fetch more money. They all require some TLC. Check out ATR Service.

Thanks for the replys and suggestions folks!

I found a used MX5050 BII in dead mint condition at the local music megastore for $200.00 OTD, with two new reels of 456. This should do fine until I can find a nice 1/2" machine.

Again, thanks for all of you suggestions and input!

Well my fun money stood in the colluseum and faced the doors- the Lady or the Tiger?

So I got the White Elephant.

That means no fun money for the Frankfurt Messe- Craig can breath a sigh of relief (does he really want to see some guy who looks like Nastassija Kinski with a 5 o'clock shadow waving at him when he's performing? Thought not), but more fun toys!

Got the Revox A-700 and some doodads- Korg line mixer for about 50 bucks, etc. Ol' Mr. Studer is responsible for the machine, and it's sisters and cousins are plentiful at RTVS, so parts and expertise among friends who only charge beer are plentiful. Looking forward to it.
