Bingo! Now everywhere I go I hear, "Oh, you're from JOY-zee!" What a dickhead! It's not like valley girl lingo. No one here ever pronounced Jersey as JOY-zee. In the north-eastern part of the state they swallow the 'r' a little bit, and it sounds like Juh-zee. Everyone else says JER-zee.

Another suggestion would be the Meek VC3Q, which Lee and Phil both like - I have the older VC3, and it's nice, too. It's a compressor AND mic pre AND eq in one small, very cost effective box.

Oh Man, Dan, for a QuadraVerb 2 ? I've been piecing together my project studio, based around a VS 1880, the budget is blown ! I don't have any outboard gear yet, but I've had my eyes on a Q2 at a local music store for about a year now. Ever since I heard the original QuadraVerb, I've been in love !

My plans for the unit: my wife and I are writing and recording for our first CD, the music is sort of an Eastern funky fingerstyle guitar with a definate Gypsy jazz / Native Indian / baroque feel. We also have quite a few clients, that we do mobile recording for who want to "raise the bar" a bit with their recordings, for their own (hopeful)releases. This piece of gear would be a really big first step in the direction of our first release.

Hey everybody, I have to let you know there are apparently certain rules and regulations involved in running a contest (see my post in the SSS contest thread). So may I suggest that this is not really a contest in the usual sense of the word, but rather, a request to obtain information on where to donate equipment.

This is also why I changed the title of the thread.

Lee,

I did some research on the FMR. This sounds like the best way I could go. In fact, all the raving makes a person want more than one of them.

Dan,

I'll check out some info on the meek. Sounds like a great way to go for vocals.

P.S. I still can't get over this whole affair. I went on a whole speal in the email I sent you. I was trying to find the words that could sum up a thank you, since a simple thank you doesn't seem quite enough.

(Btw, I meant to save a copy of the email I sent you, but I screwed up. When you respond, include a copy of it, if you will.)

(Oh no, here's another speech) I said it once, I'll say it again: I love this forum. I learn something everytime I open a thread. The wonderful people here are going to save me a whole mess of trial and error in my quest for a nice little music making oasis; I'll be aquiring usuable knowledge from the very knowledgable and experienced pros; I will have the joy of the various personalities; Craig will continue to be one of the most valuable professionals the industry could ask for; and on top of all the above listed reasons, dan"santa" @yahoo.com has offered me a bass guitar just because I asked!!!

Dan,

Hello! I've met you on another topic I believe.

I'm going to tell you why I am the one that deserves the Quadraverb 2. I've got a track that I can send to you if you wish. Just let me know if (based on your rules) you'd even bother listening to it before I waste the energy to pop it in the mail.

I really want the Quadraverb 2 because - last year for Christmas I wanted to give one of my best clients a unique gift. He's a very outspoken critic of Alesis effects processing as a whole. He normally uses plates, chambers, and Lexicon 480's and 960's. If I ever ask him how he got a particular sound he'd tell me sarcastically that it was one of his favorite Quadraverb 2 settings.

So for Christmas last year I had to go on line and buy a Quadraverb 2 for too much money in order to make his gift. I took off the top, removed most of the guts, and turned it into a bonzai tree planter. It worked GREAT! Man, that was the neetest little gizmo next to the MacAquarium (http://www.macaquarium.com/imgs/macAquariumSmall.gif). The tree looked right at home, and when I shipped it off to him it was about to go in bloom. The problem is that he's not very much of a green thumb, and the poor thing died. Lets just face it, though. It's about the best use of a Quadraverb 2 out there, no?

I'd REALLY like to have the Quadraverb 2 because after doing this once, I'd like to make one to keep myself!

OK, there's my sob story. Let me know.

Thanx!

Nika.

(Dave Bowman voice: ON):"Something wonderful"....

I don't have any examples up anywhere (yet), but in my fusion project I do a lot of ... "resonant ambience" effects, kind of like where someone might use a synth to do a pad. The problem is that I can't afford a dedicated processor to do these things live. I have an Intellifex which is *great* at doing an 8 tap chorus, but the problem is that when I transition from that sound to a "normal" guitar sound I have to sort of make allowances for the decay of that sound when I switch or it sounds screwed up. In other words, I want to have the Q2 set aside on it's own volume pedal from a split so I can use the volume pedal as a send to the unit and have it do the "Swirling Large Cloud of Ambience" (actually, Andy Summers does this sort of thing sometimes and calls it the "wobbly cloud" effect) happen - and continue to happen - while I continue to play over the top of it.

I *almost* bought a friend's Lexi LXP-100, but you can't tweak the parameters to make it sound as I want for this, and you couldn't control the parameters with CC messages (from an ART X-15).

This has always been a dilema for me, because I'm a morbid penny-pincher and I can't rationalize spending money on a dedicated effects unit to do

that. Although I *should*, I can't. The cool thing is that I know the Q2 will do the long washy reverb/chorused sounds I'm talking about and the CC control makes it even cooler to control it.

So - the music I would make with it would sound "very big and ethereal", is about the only way to put it. Sort of like what David Torn does sometimes, but less twitchy... sort of like Holdsworth's volume swell deal, but more emphasis on the ethereal nature... sort of like what Enya does tracking her voice 40 times, but more immediate and with more ninths and clusters...

Ahg.

Anyhow, I would like and could really use the Quadraverb 2...

Well, Dan, I sure would like to be in the running for the Carvin. All my links for music have somehow disappeared into "Page cannot be found"...to justify myself.

However, feel free to check out our website at:

http://www.geocities.com/tedsblues2/phdweb.htm

The RealAudio files have somehow gotten hosed. So, as of now I have nothing on the web. Did have an mp3 at rollingstone.com, but I guess they took all of the indies off that site. Also had one at http://www.recordingwebsite.com but that page "cannot be found".

Why I would like a Carvin 5 string bass? For recording purposes, and due to the fact that our bass player is a poor guy with a wife and sixteen starving children living in a tar paper shack by the Union Pacific mainline and being that the winter has been so cold, he had to chop his Teisco bass into firewood so his children wouldn't freeze.

Well, actually, as you may have surmised, that's a bit of an exaggeration. He only has six kids and lives in a trailer near an auto salvage yard. He has some propane heat, but had to pawn his bass to pay the bill.

Well, actually, that's a bit of an exaggeration, too. He's got three kids and lives in a modest but comfortable house on the outskirts of town. He's got a P-bass copy that I actually own, and an acoustic four string bass.

Well, actually, that's a little farfetched as well. He's actually an only child, his Dad is one of Kansas City's wealthiest men, but he's squandered his fortune shamelessly on women, gambling, and drink. He used to own 30 basses, many of them custom built, not to mention an enviable antique auto collection, but that was before his cocaine habit and his fourth wife took it all.

Dan, I would like to enter your contest, but the prizes wouldn't go to me, so I don't know if I qualify. I don't have a lot of gear, but enough to make a living here as an arranger/composer, but not enough to donate gear to the people I would like to help. There are a couple of universities outside of Manila that are pathetically understaffed and underequipped. Actually, a lot of grade schools in the areas not much farther are so ill-equipped that students have to share books, borrowed ones that they cannot take home.

My mother's side of the family already donated a set of acoustic guitars and bandurias (mandolin-type) and set up a local music school in their province, but I'm thinking of helping the college students in some way. You see, the parents all discourage their children to stay away from a music career because...well...the usual reasons, not stable, no money.etc. But the average monthly wage of an office worker, 9-5, is around $200 a month. I'm talking in the economic center of Manila. People don't seem to know that musicians can earn a lot more than that, providing they have some talent and work hard, which music students that I know absolutely do.

But they need equipment they can touch and learn on, something that would stimulate their curiosity and passion the way my classes on midi (with the blazing mac plus) and arp2600 did when I was at Northwestern. Unfortunately, corruption was quite rampant here in the Philippines for quite a while (though getting better now), so whenever a foundation was setup eyebrows were always raised. So I've always wanted to donate things to our country's hope, the students, for quite some time. I was actually thinking of scooping up as many Mac Quadras as I can the next time I'm in the US (I'm Fil-American), since those would be an incredible leap in technology for those universities.

My big problem is I'm mired in a court battle, since I'm second family and am only partially protected by law for only a fraction of the estate, my half-brothers are of course doing everything in their power to make the estate disappear without a trace, so my financial hands are quite tied up, even more so now with a 2yr old and 2month old baby girls . Thank God my wife is a singer and makes more money than I do! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/redface.gif

Since this is turning out to be a ridiculously long novel, I'll try to conclude it. Since this probably sounds like a big pile of horeshit to everyone who's still with me, my only proof is...well...any Filipinos in these forums? My wife, Cacai Velasquez is a pretty well known singer/tv host (better know before I whisked her away from it all), but every filipino knows her sister, Regine Velasquez, one of our country's biggest stars, and definitely the most powerful belter(a quick search should come up with a few hits). I don't have any MP3s though, I've done quite a bit of songs for her and scored her last movie and will also the next one, though all distributed only nationally, but I'm REALLY not some bozo.

Anyway, any and all gear I will most gladly receive and pass on to several schools (need to see which is the neediest). I DO have an extra keyboard controller I'll donate along with whichever modules you may decide to give, as well as some recording books. Could also send some pictures when they get their stuff if you want.

So there. Just thought I'd let y'all know how things are musically this side of the Pacific.

I'm with Ted in cheering your motives, Raul, but put this little giveaway contest aside for a minute and ask yourself, "What are needy Philipino school children going to do with an odd assortment of MIDI gear?" Seriously, I'd be all for forming a charity to raise money for stuff they could really learn music on, such as used Spanish guitars, flutes, hand drums, that sort of thing. But I'm picturing Dan's Quadraverb sitting in a schoolroom surrounded by a group of bewildered kids who don't have enough textbooks, and thinking, "Huh?"

If you really want to help the kids in your country, you should consider going around to those schools and volunteering your time to actually teach them music. Especially with your wife and sister-in-law being well known celebrities, you could probably attract a lot of enthusiasm. You could probably get grants and assistance from your government for these types of activities if you asked the right person. The dance company that I compose music for here in Philadelphia gets stipends from the state to teach children at local schools, and it is extremely rewarding work. And probably a lot more effective than just dropping off a few pieces of fancy gear and saying "Here, play with this." Where I went to school, that stuff would get stolen within a week, anyway. Really, though, there is no substitute for one-on-one interaction with kids who are eager to learn, and need successful role models like yourself.

Dan,

You asked about my musical plans:

Well, I am a multi-instrumentalist who owns as small 16 track studio. I have been promoting my own music which you will hear when you check out my site.

I have been offering local musicians studio time at a discounted rate to help promote the talent pool in the area.(and also doing the graphic art at a discounted rate for these projects) I have so far, produced 5 local acts since opening the studio 6 months ago. All of which have been receiving local radio airplay to my surprise and delight. I would plan on using any gear you saw fit to donate to me to help better my chops as a songwriter, producer and local music philanthropist.

I like to think that I am starting a new breed of project studio, where i use my resources to help further the creative endeavors of local bands and artists, as opposed to being a studio for hire. I pick and choose which projects i will work on, to ensure a creative fit, and collect enough to cover my expenses with maybe a 2% profit.

Good business? No, probably not.

I know I am learning a whole lot about an industry I love, and making good music at the same time.

What you are doing now, with this donation, I hope to be able to do 5-10 years from now!

Thanks for your consideration.

You're absolutely right, Curve, unless those Filipino kids are learning recording techniques in grade school...

Never mind...but, you're right on about starting a charity to figure out what's needed. Will you let us know what types of items are needed, Raul? I'm guessing percussion, and other sorts of beginning level musical instruments. We could do it.

That's why the focus needs to be more on the university level. Which, by world standards, these outer colleges are definitely below par-not student-intelligence wise, but quality. I don't intend to change the whole system, although I DID aspire to be dictator when I was in grade school. But a little here, a little there. And if you ask any Filipino, taking piano lessons is almost a requirement, and just about everyone sings. Especially the impoverished ones. My famous sister in law started out young singing just about everywhere imaginable just to be able to put food on the table for the entire family. They were dirt poor, but music dug them out of that hole.

So the talents are there. A friend of mine was a civil engineering major with one subject to go before ditching it and making a good living as a jingle writer, more money than he'll ever make in the construction business (again, Asia=cheap labor). My fellow cast members in Miss Saigon were the same, one was a licensed dentist , the other a banker, and my favorite-chemical engineering, all graduates, finished their degrees, and went into music because they made more money. Strange isn't it? So that's what I wold like to touch, that music side which is strangely ingrained in many many non music majors.

Besides, the school system is a little different here, people finish college at a much younger age, so usually they're learning curve hasn't plateaud (?) yet like mine, and their curiousity is still very much alive.

You could probably get grants and assistance from your government for these types of activities if you asked the right person.

[/b]

hehehe. Recently, there was a massive people power rally that deposed the unbelievably corrupt President. Unfortunately, he was President so he appointed his people to the Cabinets who had the same goals in life. The good ones resigned, but for the most part, the country was brought back 20years to the time of Mr. Corrupt himself the dictator Marcos (ya know, the husband of first lady Imelda Marcos of the literally thousands of pairs of shoes in the closet).

Anyway, needless to say the corruption goes from top to bottom. Just the other day the new Justice Department filed charges on several administrators for assigning paychecks to non-existent teachers, millions worth. The heads of the Education department also purchased very expensive SUVs for "official use" of their officers. Also the publishers and authors of the books that are distributed to the public schools & universities are strangely connected to these same officials. Money is just pocketed at EVERY freakin' level, and by the time it gets to the people it was meant for it's just chum change.

Which all basically means I alone can't change everything. But several colleagues of mine did offer special midi classes at one of our esteemed national composer's school, and quite a few were interested. But these really need to be tied up somehow with the universities, as extension classes perhaps, in order to educate the teachers who may all be quite adept at the classics, but as Curve said a lot of them will definitely go "Huh?" when they see a Quad. I work with enough musicians to know that many will be more than willing to devote time- but gear...not many.

I really apologize for taking his whole thing into such a serious route. This really just hit a nerve with me. Unfortunately my father is dead and when he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives I was too busy trying to get laid tinstead of using that connection to do something worthwhile. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/redface.gif But, better late than never. And as soon as whole court case thing blows over and my earnings can actually stay in the bank for more than 24hours before going to the landlord and phone and electric companies (I'm not EVEN going to start on those bastards), my little contributions will find their way to the ones in need.

Ok, how about something funnier? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Dan-

Wondercrush would love the Quadraverb 2 (as it seems everyone else would too) and the MC-505. We are a band in Central PA and have been together 4+years. We recorded an EP 2 1/2 years ago and obtained the money to do so by painting an Industrial Printing building and having a garage sale. We were able to scrape enough money together to record. We did all the artwork, packaging and cd burning ourselves.

Now, we have acquired an Akai and decided to do it ourselves but have no outboard gear. We have been asked to record the soundtrack and create the score for a local movie production for Vanity Factory Pictures, http://www.vanityfactory.com , so the MC-505 would come in really handy for the romps through the afterlife.

We are also ready to record our first full-length release and would like to do it right with pro mastering, cd duplication, etc. So, after having gone through my house top to bottom looking for anything to sell so we can get some outboard gear, it occurred to me that kidneys bring a lot of money... I love the band and my friends and think highly of our music but I also love my kidney. Then low and behold, I came across this thread! Is that fate or what? So, if you could please find it in your heart to put us in the running, we'd really appreciate it!

You can find our music at http://www.mp3.com/wondercrush

Wondercrush, and everyone else -

DO NOT SELL KIDNEYS or ANY OTHER BODY PART for gear or for any other reason. There are a million better ways to make money. Find someone who's making $$ and ask them how they do it. It's probably easier than you think. Don't do anything illegal, either. These kinds of activities have negative consequences that will outlast the lifespan of any piece of gear that you could ever desire.

Gear can sometimes be rented, esp. mics and preamps. You may also be able to collaborate with someone who has some gear already - enough of it has been sold in the last few years. Maybe you can work with a producer who has a studio in your area. Just don't sign your life away for the privilege. Look for a colleague who will help you develop, as opposed to a vampire who will suck you dry.

I commend you for your painting and garage sale efforts. You guys are definitely motivated, and I shall consider your request. Just don't do anything stupid. It's not worth it.
