Frames... or not?

Hi there!

I am working on a web site about microphones (which I hope you'll all like when it's finished). I'm trying my best to put a rich content.

I would like to know whether you prefer websites with or without frames and why?

Thanx!

I used to be into frames in 1997 when they first came out. I thought, wow cool, I can always keep the navigation the same & only change a "content" page. Well lo & behold there are many problems with frames:

1) external search engines, e.g., Yahoo, Excite, et. al, have problems indexing framed pages. They don't know how to "crawl" the site properly. If you have a search engine on your site, i.e., internal site search, it may have problems as well but especially if you do not have navigation elements, e.g., "Click for Home page" on every page since people will have to rely on the Back button if there's no nav elements on a framed page. See this link for more info on that: http://www.ehsco.com/opinion/19980209.html

2) Printing the page is confusing. An user needs to know to click the mouse into the frame they want printed otherwise your nav bar may get printed.

3) Bookmarking works really strangely with the different browsers.

4) Users can't really email the link of the page especially if you have more than 2 frames in a page since the correct URL does not appear in the browser Location bar.

Although I haven't done so myself, I would look into open source like PHP & MySQL especially if you plan on a lot of content and making changes frequently.

kudyba, thanks for your reply.

I always used frames in the web sites I designed because I thought the navigation would be much more easier for the user (and for the webmaster while building the site as well http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif ) but I encountered the same problems that you have mentioned above.

I had already been thinking of staying away from the frames but still wanted to hear what you people think of it.

Thanks.

I HATE FRAMES.

Frames are dumb; they assume the author of the web page knows exactly what the surfer wants to see the most, and how - which is not the case, and is quite annoying.

Then ultimately - if something in the largest frame *is* what you want to see most - you can't see all of it. OR, screen real estate is taken up by something you DON'T want to see. Annoying. Hate'em.

I would go with whatever Rob Kudyba thinks, he is extremely savvy. You are essentially getting expert consulting from him for free, take advantage of it!!

Thank you Rob and Craig! I'll post the URL when my site is up and running.

Cheers!
