98lite on Windows98 for recording OS?

Recommended Posts

I've read a little bit about using 98lite on Windows 98 on the OS for a computer designated for audio recording. Reportedly making the OS streamlined and extremely stable. Have any of you used 98lite for this purpose and are the comments about the stability and speed true?

What's the deal on 98lite? I remember reading an article, I think it was by a guy in Australia, about how he slimmed down the system. But I also think there was some problem for audio...but I'm pretty hazy about it. More details, please?

my friend uses it. His system does run faster but he has some wierd problems I have never seen anyone else have. At one point we were running IDENTICLE hardware(soundcards to) and software other than OS(what is the variable) The problems seemed to persist regardless of fresh system installs.

He seems stoked on it but I am not so sure. (If it aint broke dont fix it, especially if it makes it more broke http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif)I still run win 98se. I will let others be guiney pigs for 98lite and win2k.

Speaking of system performance Craig I read you had the overclocked 566. I was going to get that but got talked into the thunderbird/"newer" VIA chipset instead. It is fast but already I cant try out the free version of protools and drumagog crashes to. (Both have sound replace software I really need to doctor up drums...figures)

How many plugins etc can you run on that machine? From what you have heard how much slower is it than thunderbird of same speed? Should I switch? Is it definately "plenty" fast? Because if it is I think gauranteed compatibility would probably be worth the trade off.

Well, I've heard from a ton of people that Pro Tools free is problematic, don't think it's necessarily your machine.

Haven't worked with the Thunderbird, and the number of plug-ins I can run depends on the complexity of the plug-in. A good rule of thumb was with Logic, where I tired to push it to the limits and came up with 24 tracks and 12 decent-sized plug-ins. With Acid, I have yet to find out how many tracks it would take to crash the machine - I've done over 60 for some movies.

The overclocked Celeron may be humble, but it smokes and is cheap! But part of the reason for the performance is that that the guy who integrates the Q Performance Systems computers for East Coast Music Mall, Pete Leoni, is a friggin' genius. He chooses every component, including video cards etc., solely with audio performance in mind. And don't forget lots of RAM!!

Thanks, that is good to know that even pentium machines are having trouble with protools free. If that is the case then I will stick with my machine because other then those couple tiny things it is extremely fast as I was promised and can run an a unruly amount of tracks/plugins.

I have heard many happy testimonials about the thunderbird, it just figures I would instantly try the only two things that didnt work with it.

http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif I am one of Mr. Murphies special projects I guess.

Thanks,

-Josh.
