Audio patchbays for the studio

I have a home recording studio which has evolved over time to include way too much gear! I record thru Layla and a Roland VS1680. I have started to bypass my Mackie 24/8 board and record direct with a dbx Quantum or an Avalon 737SP. I have synths, sound modules, drum machines, effects processors, all the good stuff, but no patchbays. Besides directly routing an instrument or mic from a preamp to an effect processor to my recorder, can I use a patchbay to insert an effect on a number of instruments and/or tracks. What about the appropriat patchbay and configuration? Is the Neutrik spl recommended? I believe i want all 1/4" TRS. I probably need three 48-input patchbays. Thank you for any input or advice you can offer. Dan Kleiner.
