stratman_dup1
Hey everyone- I know you all have probably heard this before, I just thought I would re-enforce it due to recent events in my life. WATCH YOUR BACK, literally, especially those who gig and find themselves setting up and tearing down night after night. Most importantly for those who may not have insurance, what are you going to do when you can't even go to the bathroom by yourself much less try and gig to make some cash to pay some rather large medical bills. I won't even mention the cost of medical care required to try and get you back to normal. I have unfortunately had to deal with a bulging disk in my back recently and I'm here to tell you it's NO FUN. I had to have a cane in one hand and my other arm around my wife, it still took me 10 minutes to get 15 feet to the bathroom. At least I didn't need help IN the bathroom, that would REALLY SUCK http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif. I tell ya, I know what it feels like to be crippled now and it SUCKS. And don't think because your young it can't happen to you, I'm only 29. I have generally tried to take good care of my back but Obviously I didn't do a good enough job. Just wanted to throw out a reminder to those who are in danger of hurting their back, take care of it folks. Don't lift a massive sub by yourself, get help. Use a dolly, do anything you can to prevent a back injury, they are truly debilitating. The worst part is that sometimes a back injury never completely heals. I am facing the possibility of a permanent back injury , which is something you REALLY don't want. Thank god I at least have good insurance, I woulda been up the proverbial creek if I didn't. Enough said, I hope for your sake that you heed my warning.
Tedster
Anytime you see a beer delivery guy, or a UPS dude, or furniture mover, etc...they ALWAYS wear one of those elastic back supports. Roadies, or musicians who act as their own roadies, should be no exception. I've had back problems, I can identify with the 15 minutes trying to get out of bed to take a leak in the middle of the night. Good advice... Knees can be another source of problems, too... Jonathan Hughes
In addition to "watch your back," I'll add "sit up straight!" I, too, had a protruding disc (which was pinching my sciatic nerve -- OWWWW!!!!), and it's no fun (and after 6 weeks, things aren't toally back to normal). Since I didn't do anything to cause it (fall over, lift anything huge, etc.), it's most likely due to years of bad posture. So those of you who spend your days (like me) sitting in front of a computer, sit up straight! Jonathan
