Roland U-8 or Tascam US-428

Recommended Posts

Which one should I get?

The Roland U-8 got a Best of 2000 feature at Electronic Musician Magazine, but they seem to buy into alot of the Roland hype.

Anyone try these? Anyone recommend anything? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help, one and all.

And hello to all of my MP3.com, Besonic.com, and Paisley board buds!

Regards,

Shaky Tee

Tascam has better features IMHO. I have one and it works fine, but there's been some driver problems for a lot of people. New drivers are in Beta test stage right now and should be out in a few days or so.

I am using the US-428 as well. It's working for me on Macintosh and WinME.

Tascam maintains a FAQ and an active Bulletin Board for the product that I would recommend spending time with before you make a purchase. The product was mis-marketed as a Portastudio replacement for people who wanted to migrate to an entry-level DAW. This is a mismatch. You really don't want people who don't care what kind of a motherboard chipset they have screwing around with this rather sharp knife.

Based on one man's reading of their Bulletin boards I would characterize the happier US-428 users as computer-savvy tweaks (who weren't married to W2K or NT4) who had a real good reason for wanting a USB i/o solution with 24 bit resolution who dug the idea of a control surface that spoke CS-10 and MIDI and who did their real work in 1 to 4 tracks while attached to a computer without requiring additional external sends or busses. (it's a run-on sentence for a reason - think about it...)

The Event box looks interesting as well, but it is not yet available. The Event homepage advises us to "Be Here Now". I think that they mean it, too. The Event box offers lightpipe, sends and busses and might do something without a host computer. This is probably more useful to a lot of people, but the Tascam may work for you today.

I had really expected IEEE1394 boxes to pick up where these pieces left off. What's the holdup with these, I wonder?

Wow!! A response!!

I'm going back and forth. I'm hearing more positive word of mouth from other users regarding the Tascam unit, rather than the Roland unit (availability, perhaps? My local Guitar Center is selling the Tascam; I can only find the Roland on the internet). I'm already seeing the Event box being advertised for $700.00 (I think I saw it in a Sam Ash catalog), and THAT also looks really promising.

I have some coworkers going to the NAMM show (I think), so I'll have to have them keep an eye out as well.

As for Tascam as a portastudio replacement, well, I never used one, and, while I'm somewhat computer-savvy, I really dream of something that is TRULY plug and play (the Roland unit apparently has motherboard chipset issues as well; I HATE that)

Any other ideas?

shaky!!

Tascm = 24bit Roland = 16 bit

tas = 2xXLR in, 2x1/4" in (4 total).. rol = 2 tacks in.. unbalanced.

Tascam = great tech support (in my exp) rol = weak, at best (also in my exp.)

Man, Camn, this is so hard.

I hear what everyone is saying about the Tascam, but those EFFECTS on the Roland may be too hard to pass up?

Just to not have to spend HOURS tweaking effects or to scour the internet for a freebie software reverb unit, only to find that the presents are limited, or crippled.
