aliengroover
Hey Guys! I recently purchased a Rode NT1 mic, which I use with a Tascam 788 and Mackie MS1202, with Alesis Monitor Ones. My problem is that my vocals are extremely thin sounding when tracking. It's only with the NT1. I've used dynamics (a couple of audio technicas and shures), and had no problems. I know it's because of the nature and sensitivity of the mic, so my question is this: In a fair size concrete basement (don't know length, but maybe 15 feet or so across), what is my best bet for acoustic treatment to capture vocals properly (that's all I'll be doing). Thanks for the help and Happy Holidays to you all! If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking 'til you do suck seed!
Steven Denike
Is the phantom power on? What about the gain sensitivity? My experience with the NT1 has been great - and my biggest worry is actually high-end (doesn't that mean expensive?) reflections from the ceiling. Try hanging a sheet or blanket across the ceiling above the mic . . . also, what are you using for a Pop screen? Although the NT1 doesn't really need one, it does make a difference in the sound - as well as a difference in the distance to the source.
aliengroover
Actually I am using a pop filter (store bought) and phantom power, I just think it's with acoustics, picking up too much of the room and too little of the singer. I think I might do what you're suggesting, as well as something maybe behind the vocalist. Thanks for your help. If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking 'til you do suck seed! BP3
If the dynamic sounds better than the condenser for a given voice, use it. It just happens that way sometimes. Happy 2001 http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

You're not singing into the back of the mic, are you? I remember when I bought my NT-2, It took a few seconds to figure out what was the front and what was the back. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Richard http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif
Anderton
Good point about the back of the mic. Also might want to check for mismatches with respect to impedance, or improperly-wired phantom power lines. ajcamletearthlink.net
How far is the vocalist from the Nt1?
aliengroover
The vocalist is right in front of the mic. But I'll look into which side of the mic she's singing on. That's something I never even thought of. Once again you guys come through. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks ten million!!! KenElevenShadows
If the vocalist sounds better on a dynamic, why not use a dynamic? If you like the top end that your NT-1 achieves (I don't recall the NT-1 having a top end that I liked for any female vocalists I've heard) and like the "larger" quality of the dynamics, why not use both mics at once to record the vocalist? ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/nectar ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ music*travel photos*tibet*lots of stuff "Sangsara" "Irian Jaya" & d i t h er CDs available! http://www.elevenshadows.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ken Lee Photography - photos and books Eleven Shadows ambient music The Mercury Seven-cool spacey music Linktree to various sites Instagram Nightaxians Video Podcast Eleven Shadows website Ken Lee Photography Pinterest Page
